Star Wars quickly became a massive success in terms of merchandise, starting with the famous empty box campaign in 1977. Because the franchise was so popular, Lucasfilm easily partnered with companies to create all sorts of related products. Toys, in particular, have always been a big hit – kids love playing with them and recreating scenes from the movies, while collectors enjoy finding rare and valuable items, often spending a lot of money to complete their collections. A recent auction bid for a Han Solo action figure is a perfect example of this demand.
Hake’s Auctions recently sold a 1984 Han Solo action figure from the Return of the Jedi collection for an impressive $31,720. The figure, which includes its original light brown trench coat, attracted 22 bids and far exceeded its estimated value of $5,000 to $10,000. The high price likely reflects the figure’s rarity, making it a highly sought-after item for collectors.
The History of the Han Solo (Trench Coat) Action Figure

The Han Solo action figure, featuring a trench coat, was designed after scenes from the forest moon of Endor, where Han wears camouflage. The toy’s coat accurately reproduces the pattern seen in Return of the Jedi. This pattern is the key difference between the released version and a prototype figure recently sold at auction. The auctioned figure was described as the only one of its kind to be professionally graded for authenticity, making it a very rare item for collectors.
As we’ve observed, items become more valuable when they’re rare. For example, the prop gun Harrison Ford used in the original Star Wars film, A New Hope, sold for $1.057 million – it was the only one of the three made that was available for sale. Props used during filming are always expensive, but this one was particularly valuable because it’s unique and has an interesting history. Before Star Wars, this very same gun was used by Frank Sinatra in the film The Naked Runner and was then modified for use in Star Wars. Because so few exist, demand is high, resulting in incredibly high prices.
If you’re looking to buy a Han Solo figure with the classic trench coat, it could be expensive, but not outrageously so. While the more common, patterned trench coat versions might cost a few hundred dollars (according to Galactic Collector), the price difference really shows how much rarer figures are worth. The patterned trench coats were made in large quantities and were readily available when they first came out. They’re still desirable, particularly if they’re still in their original packaging, but they don’t come close to the value of the very first prototypes.
The Han Solo prototype recently fetched a much higher price at auction than an unpainted Short Round prototype, which sold for $1,562. Although Indiana Jones is popular, Star Wars has consistently been the more sought-after franchise by collectors, driving up the prices for Star Wars items. The fact that the Han Solo prototype was painted, making it appear more finished, probably contributed to its higher sale price as well.
