A horror comedy released in 1999 didn’t find an audience at first, but a new remake could finally give it the recognition it deserves. Blending horror and comedy is difficult – while some films like Brendan Fraser’s Mummy movies were huge hits, many others have failed to deliver a good return on investment. Recent examples like the 2023 Haunted Mansion reboot and the 2013 film R.I.P.D. show that successfully combining scares and humor is a real challenge.
Not all horror comedies deserve to fail, and 1999’s Idle Hands is a prime example. It’s a genuinely funny stoner comedy about a lazy teenager whose hand becomes possessed and leads him to commit murders. The film features a talented cast including Devon Sawa, Seth Green, Elden Henson, Vivica A. Fox, and a young Jessica Alba, with a cameo by Fred Willard and even an appearance by the band The Offspring. Despite all this, the movie unfortunately suffered from bad timing and couldn’t earn back its $25 million budget, only bringing in $4.2 million at the box office.
Idle Hands Was A Box-Office Disaster Upon Its Aril 30 1999 Release

Despite receiving negative reviews, the poor box office performance of Idle Hands wasn’t mainly due to critical reception. The film was released around the same time as the Columbine shooting, which prompted the distributor to reduce advertising and cancel the premiere. CNN reported that this significant decrease in promotion was a key reason for the film’s failure, but the movie’s negative critical response and its comedic take on a teenager involved in a school shooting also contributed to its underperformance.
Similar to how Kaley Cuoco’s Killer Movie came out before the recent wave of slasher films became popular and didn’t find an audience, Idle Hands suffered from bad timing and never got the recognition it deserved. Looking back, Idle Hands is actually a really fun and silly horror comedy – it’s so over-the-top that it doesn’t feel genuinely offensive. It’s a lot like a lost installment of the Scary Movie series, focusing more on crude jokes about sex and drugs than on anything truly shocking.
Stranger Things Star’s Upcoming Idle Hands Remake Can Redeem The Cult Hit

The cult classic stoner horror film Idle Hands is getting a remake, and it could finally get the recognition it deserves. Finn Wolfhard, known from Stranger Things, and his Hell of a Summer collaborator Billy Byrk are planning to update the movie in 2024. Their previous work shows they understand the perfect mix of laid-back comedy and scary thrills needed for this project. With Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan – both directors of Ghostbusters films – producing, there’s hope this new version will be a hit, unlike the original which didn’t find its audience at the time.
