Even though All Dogs Go To Heaven came out in theaters in the late 1980s, it remains a popular movie today. Its enduring appeal is likely due to its touching story, distinctive animation, and memorable characters. As with many beloved films, stories have circulated over the years about the movie and its production. Recently, the director, Don Bluth, addressed a persistent rumor on social media, clarifying details about a particular character and how their performance was received.
A particularly heartbreaking aspect of the film All Dogs Go To Heaven for many viewers is the performance of Judith Barsi, the voice of Anne-Marie. A tragic story circulated claiming Burt Reynolds, who voiced Charlie B. Barkin, cried after learning of Barsi’s death at the hands of her father. However, director Don Bluth refuted this, stating it wasn’t true. Bluth did explain that after Barsi’s passing, work on the Anne-Marie character was halted for about two weeks, as the team found it too painful to listen to her recordings.
When we heard the news, our team paused work on the Anne-Marie project for roughly two weeks. It was too upsetting to continue listening to Judith’s recordings, and no one could bring themselves to do it. -Don

The History of Dogs Going to Heaven
While the original All Dogs Go To Heaven was a tearjerker, the story quickly became more lighthearted as it continued. A sequel was released in 1996, though it featured a new cast and director. The franchise also included a surprisingly long-running Saturday morning cartoon series, which picked up right after the events of the sequel and brought back the original characters as guardian angels helping people. The cartoon lasted three seasons with a total of forty episodes, ending in 1998. A Christmas special, An All Dogs Christmas Special, was also created. Since then, there haven’t been any new additions to the world originally created by Don Bluth.
If you haven’t seen the classic animated film All Dogs Go To Heaven, it will soon be harder to find. It’s leaving both Amazon Prime Video and MGM+, and it’s currently unknown if it will be available on another streaming service. While you can still rent or buy the movie online, those with streaming subscriptions won’t be able to watch it easily. Don Bluth is a highly respected name in animation – other well-known films he’s worked on include An American Tail, The Land Before Time, and Anastasia.
