Stephen King is a truly masterful horror writer. He’s created some of the most famous stories in the genre, many of which have also become popular and frightening movies. Films like Misery and IT have consistently thrilled audiences, and we see new adaptations of his work released almost every year. But one adaptation, in particular, is widely considered a standout – and it’s soon going to be available for free streaming.
I’m really excited to share that The Mist is coming to Kanopy on May 15th – and the best part is, it’s free to stream if you have a library card! This movie takes place in Bridgton, Maine, the day after a terrible storm. It follows a local artist, David Drayton, and his son as they head to the grocery store, only to find the town completely enveloped in a bizarre, thick mist. What starts as a search for supplies quickly turns into a desperate fight for survival, not just against the creatures lurking outside the store, but also the dangers that emerge from within. It’s a seriously gripping thriller!
The Mist Is a Fantastic King Adaptation (That is Somehow Even More Grim Than the Book)

Both the book and the movie adaptation of The Mist are genuinely frightening. While the film does an excellent job of creating a terrifying atmosphere, its ending is a particularly shocking departure from the source material. The book offers a glimmer of hope, leaving readers with the image of survivors driving off with a faint radio signal, unsure of their destination but still alive. The movie, however, delivers a devastating and heartbreaking twist. Without giving away spoilers, the film’s ending involves a desperate decision by Drayton that ultimately proves futile, leaving viewers with a truly grim conclusion – an ending even Stephen King himself admired.
The movie The Mist doesn’t just alter the ending from the book; it also expands on how the mist came to be, which is left more mysterious in the original story. This change is small, but it actually makes the film more impactful. In fact, with its changes to both the mist’s origins and the ending, The Mist is a standout example of a movie adaptation that’s arguably better than the book it’s based on. The film was well-received by critics and did well in theaters, making it a great choice for a late spring horror movie when it arrives on Kanopy May 15th.
