Anne Hathaway’s Stephen King-Style Thriller Verity Gets First Trailer

Amazon MGM Studios just dropped the first trailer for Verity, a suspenseful thriller hitting cinemas this autumn. The film is based on the popular novel by Colleen Hoover, and its story shares similarities with Misery, but with a flipped dynamic.

The thriller Verity will be released in US theaters on October 2, 2026. Unlike Misery, which focuses on an author held captive by a fan, Verity flips the script – Anne Hathaway plays the author who is the antagonist. The story follows an up-and-coming writer who uncovers shocking secrets while staying with Verity Crawford, and must decide whether to reveal them. The new trailer shows a suspenseful and disturbing film with some truly unsettling scenes. You can watch the trailer below.

Verity’s First Teaser Trailer Has Been Unveiled

The psychological thriller Verity centers around Lowen Ashleigh, a writer who takes a job ghostwriting for bestselling author Verity Crawford. While working at the Crawford estate, Lowen discovers Verity’s unsettling autobiography, filled with shocking confessions about her husband, Jeremy. As Lowen reads, she struggles to determine what’s real and what’s fabricated, questioning whether she’s being manipulated, drawn in by attraction, or consumed by obsession.

Michael Showalter, known for directing Wet Hot American Summer, helmed the film Verity. The screenplay was written by Nick Antosca (Channel Zero) and based on the novel by Colleen Hoover. The movie stars Dakota Johnson (Fifty Shades of Grey), Anne Hathaway (The Idea of You), and Josh Hartnett (Oppenheimer), alongside Brady Wagner (Liz Here Now), Asel Swango (Power Book II: Ghost), and Daniel Echevarria.

Verity Has Been Six Years in the Making

Development on this project began almost six years ago, in late 2020, with Antosca as one of the initial creators. After several revisions, Showalter joined in 2024, and Hathaway was cast as a lead actress. Filming took place from early 2025 and concluded last April. Originally planned for a May 2026 theatrical release, the film’s release date has been moved to this October.

Anne Hathaway has several major projects coming out this year. Following her role in the A24 thriller Mother Mary, she’ll be back in theaters this weekend with The Devil Wears Prada 2, a sequel to the popular 2006 film. Later this year, she stars in Christopher Nolan’s new epic, The Odyssey, scheduled for release on July 17th, and will appear alongside Ewan McGregor in a sci-fi survival film debuting on August 14th.

Verity will be on Oct. 2, 2026.
