As a longtime X-Men fan, I’ve always wondered who really leads the team. Professor X is the obvious answer – he built the school and started the whole thing! But honestly, so many mutants have taken the reins. Storm is always a strong presence and a natural leader, and even Wolverine has led teams, though he seems to hate actually being in charge. Still, if you look at the history, there’s one hero who keeps ending up as the main leader, time and time again.

Cyclops is a controversial figure in the X-Men world, sparking strong opinions from both fans and other mutants. He’s known for being determined, powerful, and unwavering in his beliefs, but also for his significant flaws and occasional brushes with villainy. While he isn’t always seen as the ideal leader, Cyclops frequently becomes the X-Men’s go-to choice, which often causes conflict and division among allies. Leading continues to be a struggle for Scott Summers, but he feels unable to step away from the responsibility.

Cyclops Learned Everything He Knows From Professor X

Understanding how Cyclops’s leadership has evolved—and become flawed—requires looking at his beginnings. He’s a mutant whose incredibly powerful ability fundamentally altered his life. His laser vision caused him emotional distress and made it hard to connect with others when he was young. That’s why Professor Xavier’s school was such a good fit; it offered him a fresh start. The X-Mansion provided the support and guidance he needed to build a more typical life and channel his powers towards helping others and personal growth.

Cyclops was one of the very first students at Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters and witnessed the X-Men’s vision come to life. The original students share a special understanding of how much the X-Men have evolved. Today’s mutants can’t fully grasp how difficult things used to be. While the world remains harsh towards anyone who is different or seen as a threat, there’s now at least a place where mutants can find hope. Scott Summers experienced that hope early on, and he’s dedicated to creating that same feeling for others.

Cyclops learned everything about leadership from Professor Xavier, both the good and the bad. Xavier mentored all the X-Men, but Cyclops was particularly devoted to him. While Cyclops now recognizes Xavier’s flaws and has even rejected some of his teachings, Xavier’s influence is still clear in Cyclops’s strong and often uncompromising leadership style. He might feel obligated to continue Xavier’s work and preserve his vision for mutants. Or, he could believe he can build a better mutant community, one that doesn’t exploit others. Whatever his reasons, Cyclops consistently chooses the burdens of leadership over a peaceful life, and this decision has repeatedly caused him problems.

A great example of this can be seen in the 2012 storyline Avengers Vs. X-Men. When Marvel Comics decided to have these two powerful teams fight, they needed a believable reason for the conflict. That reason centered around the Phoenix Force. Following the devastating events of House of M, the Phoenix Force appeared to offer a potential solution for the mutant population. However, Cyclops became fixated on the positive impact this powerful force could have, and that obsession ultimately led to his corruption.

It’s tempting to blame the Phoenix Force for Cyclops’s descent into darkness, but his need for control and power was always present. He didn’t simply fall into making bad decisions; he actively pursued them, risking everything to help both mutants and humans – or so he believed. This ultimately proved to be a disastrous example of leadership for him. You’d think he’d avoid leadership roles afterward, but eventually, he stepped up again, leading a new generation of mutants.

The Krakoan Era brought massive changes to the Marvel Universe when mutants established their own nation on the island of Krakoa. This story, which unfolded from 2019 to 2024, heavily focused on the challenges of building a new society and the diplomacy involved. Throughout this period, Cyclops remained a leader of the X-Men and a powerful figure within Krakoa. However, his poor decisions ultimately contributed to Krakoa’s collapse, and he faced the consequences. Cyclops became an easy target for humanity’s distrust, with his past actions fueling suspicion and animosity.

The X-Men Member Continues To Stand Out As The Core Of The Team

Currently, Cyclops remains a central leader within the X-Men universe. He recently played a key role in rescuing Professor X, even debating whether the Professor should be contained. Despite leading the core X-Men, other groups consistently doubt his abilities. Cyclops isn’t popular, and past mistakes have damaged his reputation. However, he continues to be placed in charge, which is a compelling aspect of his character.

Characters who’ve followed similar paths often eventually move out of leadership positions. Iron Man, while still an Avenger, is now very cautious about leading and usually lets others take charge outside his own company, avoiding difficult decisions for the team. Scott Summers is different; he continually insists on leading, driven by a need to fix past mistakes and believing he’s the only one who can make the hard choices.

Imagine if Cyclops took a different path. If he hadn’t constantly sought leadership and instead focused on being a dependable team member, he might have become a true hero. It could have even improved his relationship with Jean Grey and prevented him from alienating so many people. He also wouldn’t be a figure of controversy. Ultimately, Cyclops’ recent actions have damaged his reputation and, by extension, weakened the X-Men, as many now distrust him.

Cyclops is a compelling character, even though his actions are often questionable. Despite his flaws, he remains one of the X-Men’s most devoted fighters. While his future is unclear, it’s likely he’ll lead again – he often naturally falls into a leadership role and actively embraces it. This willingness to sacrifice his own reputation for the good of others is the mark of a true hero, taking on burdens no one else will.
