Arnold Schwarzenegger is famous for his action roles, but he’s shown he can succeed in other genres, including horror. While he appeared in sci-fi thrillers with horror elements like Predator and Terminator in the 1980s, he later starred in a lesser-known 1990s horror film that’s now available to stream on Prime Video.
You may have forgotten about End of Days, the 1999 action-horror film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. In it, Schwarzenegger plays a disillusioned ex-cop who has to rediscover his faith to protect a young woman from Satan in New York City as the year 2000 approaches. Starring alongside Schwarzenegger are Robin Tunney and Gabriel Byrne. This often-overlooked film is now streaming on Prime Video, having become available on April 1st.
End of Days Blends Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Signature Action With Supernatural Horror
Although End of Days marked Arnold Schwarzenegger’s first venture into horror, it still delivered the explosive action his fans expected. He played Jericho Cane, a more flawed and vulnerable character than his usual invincible heroes, but the film pitted him against a compelling and dangerous version of Satan in a classic good versus evil story. The movie is packed with action from start to finish, focusing on a desperate attempt to save a woman from Satan, and features thrilling sequences like subway gunfights, explosions, and fast-paced chases.
I have to admit, while I was really intrigued by the idea of Arnold Schwarzenegger battling supernatural forces in End of Days, it didn’t quite live up to its potential. It did okay at the box office, bringing in $212 million worldwide, but critics weren’t impressed – it only scored an 11% on Rotten Tomatoes, making it one of his lowest-rated films ever. Even general audiences weren’t completely sold, giving it a 33% on the ‘Popcornmeter,’ which still puts it among his least favorite movies with viewers. But honestly, despite all that, I find End of Days surprisingly compelling. It’s a really dark and atmospheric film for Arnold, and I enjoy it – maybe as a bit of a guilty pleasure, but enjoyable nonetheless.
Other Horror Movies Now on Prime Video
Prime Video has added a bunch of new movies, including several horror titles released in April. You can now stream films like End of Days, both versions of Child’s Play (1988 and 2019), and the 2023 Teen Wolf: The Movie. Other recent additions include the ‘80s horror comedy Killer Klowns from Outer Space, Tobe Hooper’s Lifeforce, and both the original 1975 The Amityville Horror and its 2005 remake.
