So, everyone was kinda guessing that the Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced remake wouldn’t have those modern-day sections with Desmond, and it’s now confirmed. I read an interview with the game director, Richard Knight, and he explained it pretty clearly. Basically, he said people just aren’t as into the Desmond stuff now as they were when Black Flag first came out back in 2013. It makes sense – most of us just wanna sail the seas as an awesome pirate!
Players enjoyed the contemporary sections of early Assassin’s Creed games because the character Desmond provided a strong narrative connection. After the events of Assassin’s Creed 3, fans were left wondering what happened to Desmond’s allies. Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag addressed these questions in its modern-day scenes, bringing back characters like Shaun Hastings and Rebecca Crane.
He explained that understanding the fate of Desmond’s friends was crucial initially. However, their goal is to reimagine Black Flag for a modern audience. While the original game remains available, this updated version represents the newest Assassin’s Creed installment, following Shadows. It’s a faithful retelling of the story, but also feels fresh and new.
With over ten years since Desmond’s story concluded, Knight explained that focusing on past events isn’t what’s important now, given the release of new games like Shadows and Mirage.
In 2017’s Assassin’s Creed Origins, Layla Hassan was introduced as a new character who allowed players to experience the game’s modern-day story. She became a key figure in both Odyssey and Valhalla. Now, with Assassin’s Creed Shadows beginning a fresh storyline for the modern setting, the creators have announced that Black Flag Resynced will offer clues about the events in the newer games. This will be done through new “what if” scenarios, letting players see things from Edward Kenway’s perspective in Black Flag Resynced.
“We knew that what we wanted to do was continue what’s been starting to be told with Shadows, but we also wanted something that ties directly to the game you’re playing, so something to Edward’s experience,” he said. “What we came up with is these four rifts that you can find if you so choose, or you can choose to ignore them and just be Edward, the pirate and the assassin, and stick to that.
“They tell these ‘what if’ scenarios so that it still feels tied to that game, so even if you do go find this modern-day experience, you’re still playing Black Flag Resynced – you’re still playing Edward’s adventure, and you don’t feel like you’ve taken a break for hours.”
The lack of modern-day segments in Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced also opens up the game to go deeper into the core story of Edward Kenway during the age of piracy by offering more refined gameplay and a little bit more content.
We wanted to maintain the original feel of the game while improving it, staying true to the core story but with greater detail. The team successfully captured what made the original special, and now we can expand on it – not just by updating it for modern players and adding new features, but also by adding more content and exploring storylines that didn’t get fully developed before.
Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced is coming to PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S on July 9th.
