The following episode contains spoilers for Dutton Ranch season 1, episode 3.
Just when it looked like Beth (Kelly Reilly) and Rip (Cole Hauser) had finally settled into Texas life, the end of Dutton Ranch episode 3 delivers them a devastating “act of god business” — or possibly an act of Beulah Jackson (Annette Bening). It’s quite the reversal from the beginning of the episode, which sees the Dutton Ranch main characters start their day with a ride before splitting off to do what they each do best — Rip tending cattle and Beth making money.
It was only a matter of time before Beth the business shark came to Dutton Ranch, and in episode 3, she is officially back, Louboutins and all. She drives out to Dallas and uses her considerable savvy — this time more with honey than the vinegar she used in Yellowstone — to broker a deal and supply her ranch’s beef to the city’s most luxurious steakhouse.
In a fun Yellowstone Easter egg, Beth has a Dutton Ranch version of her classic barroom takedowns, only this time, rather than verbally eviscerating the man who deigns to approach her, she listens to what Joaquin (Juan Pablo Raba) has to say. Beth knows that Joaquin is affiliated with the 10 Petal Ranch, so anything he says could be valuable intel — even if he does remind her of Jamie Dutton (Wes Bentley).
Unfortunately, while Beth scores a win, Rip suffers a monumental loss. After one of his cows is found foaming at the mouth and with blistered hooves, Rip calls Everett (Ed Harris), who confirms the worst — the cow has foot-and-mouth disease, likely from the ranch’s brand new bull. Though Rip and his crew attempt to quarantine the herd, the outbreak has already spread, which will cost the Dutton Ranch all of their cattle.
Beth and Rip aren’t the only ones who face a terrifying future, as Beulah receives a menacing phone call from an unknown man who appears to have power over her, and he’s concerned about the changes in her bunkhouse. Meanwhile, Zachariah (Marc Menchaca) is confronted by the past, while Carter (Finn Little) and Oreana (Natalie Alyn Lind) are living in the present, but episode 3 makes it clear that all characters are headed for a reckoning.
Foot-And-Mouth Disease Devastates Dutton Ranch, But That’s Not Beth & Rip’s Only Problem
Given how skilled a rancher Rip is, it may seem shocking that foot-and-mouth disease came to Dutton Ranch so early into his running the outfit. The Edwardses, whom Beth and Rip bought the ranch from, are honest people who would have never sold them cattle that was diseased. The likely culprit for this tragedy is Beulah Jackson.
In Dutton Ranch episode 2, Beulah was present at the cattle auction and bid against Rip for the bull, which he won with a $10,000 bid. The Dutton Ranch is on Beulah’s radar, and when she realizes she can’t bully Beth into submission, the Yellowstone universe’s best villain is apparently fighting dirty in other ways.
Foot-and-mouth disease spreads rapidly, and despite Rip and his team trying to isolate the sick animals, it quickly became clear they couldn’t stop it when another cow showed signs of illness. Rip and Beth have invested everything they have into the Dutton Ranch, and now they face the heartbreaking task of eliminating the entire herd and starting over from the beginning.
Beth doesn’t fully understand the trouble Rip is in, as he’s hiding something significant from her. He claims he’s always been honest with her, but earlier in the episode, he deliberately kept her in the dark about discovering a body on their ranch and taking care of it. Since Beth and Rip became a strong couple on Yellowstone, their strength has come from being united, and any cracks in that unity will make them even more exposed.
Beulah Jackson May Not Be Dutton Ranch’s Biggest Villain
Though Beulah is currently positioned as the main antagonist opposing John Dutton in Yellowstone, a potentially bigger danger is brewing. As Beulah attempts to fix problems within her ranch, she receives a demanding call from a man named Mariano (Raoul Max Trujillo), who is worried about unforeseen issues.
Beulah is clearly disturbed by this news, prompting her to unexpectedly visit the home of Wes’s wife, Whitney Ayers (Olivia Rose Keegan). Whitney had previously expressed public concerns about Wes’s disappearance. When Beulah discovers Whitney has left town, she calls it a serious issue, suggesting she’ll become even more determined – and potentially aggressive – in her search for answers.
However, episode 3 also showed a softer side to Beulah. While attending the late sheriff’s funeral, she and Everett reminisce about the past, and it’s heavily implied that they have one of their own. At the end of the episode, Beulah returns home to find Oreana’s bedroom deserted, and height markings on the wall reveal that the bedroom was once Beulah’s when she was young.
Beulah Jackson is a complicated character. While she’s a powerful ranch owner known for being ruthless towards rivals, she also has a softer side as a loving grandmother and someone capable of romance. This complexity makes her a particularly interesting villain within the Yellowstone world, and sets the stage for more compelling stories involving her in future seasons of Dutton Ranch.
Oreana And Carter Are Officially Beth And Rip 2.0
Oreana and Carter’s parallels to a young Beth and Rip are plain as day: Oreana is the fiery yet spoiled youngest generation of a powerful ranch family, while Carter is a hardworking cowboy who was smitten the second she looked his way. Though previous episodes made it seem like Oreana might be jerking Carter around, when he peed on her cheating ex’s truck, the youngest Jackson realized she found herself a keeper.
At the end of the episode, Carter sneaks Oreana into his bedroom, where she strips down to her underwear to change out of her dress and into one of his T-shirts. After he falls asleep, she wakes him up with kisses, and it’s implied that they consummate their relationship. This is likely Carter’s first time having sex, and given how he already felt about Oreana prior to the event, he’s guaranteed to fall harder.
The real problem isn’t Oreana herself, but the issues with her family. Beulah is fiercely protective and controlling, and Beth doesn’t trust the owner of 10 Petal Ranch. Because Beulah is likely responsible for the sickness affecting Beth and Rip’s bull, and they’re bound to discover she’s involved, Oreana and Carter could end up facing a similarly tragic situation to Romeo and Juliet.
Zachariah’s Past Comes Back To Haunt Him
Zachariah (Marc Menchaca) is similar to Walker (Ryan Bingham) from Yellowstone – Rip hires him right out of prison. Rip doesn’t seem to care about Zachariah’s past, but viewers definitely do, and episode 3 finally revealed it.
While Rip and his team struggle with the quarantine, a woman named Anna arrives, determined to kill Zachariah for hurting Theresa. Rip manages to calm her down, demonstrating his ability to handle conflict with both force and diplomacy. He asks Everett, who understands what happened, to offer Anna some comfort.
Later, over a campfire, Zachariah tells the story: Theresa was the love of his life, and they had a secret relationship that Anna didn’t know about. In an argument with Theresa, Zachariah tried to drive away in his truck, but because he was drunk, he killed her. This is the reason Zachariah put down the bottle and turned to religion, though he obviously hasn’t forgiven himself.
Old sin is a big theme in the Yellowstone universe, and Zachariah likely isn’t done paying the price for his. However, with his employer’s ranch in the midst of a devastating crisis, the diseased cattle are sure to be the primary storyline of Dutton Ranch episode 4.
