Ubisoft is still developing Assassin’s Creed Codename Hexe, but hasn’t shared many details. However, a recent leak from Ubisoft insider Rogue Tx, spotted on Reddit, suggests that Ezio Auditore da Firenze – the hero of the Assassin’s Creed 2 trilogy – will appear as a mentor to the game’s new main character.
According to recent leaks, the main character will be named Anika, replacing the earlier reported name of Elsa. This initial name was likely just a temporary placeholder, much like Ubisoft used “Jora” during development of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla to represent Eivor. Another leaker, j0nathan, has confirmed this information. The character is said to be related to Claudia Auditore, and the game, Codename Hexe, will largely take place in Wurzburg, Germany.
It looks like Ezio Auditore might be returning in a future game! A line of dialogue from a character named Anika – “That white hood, it’s like the one in my mother’s drawing” – has surfaced, hinting at his involvement. Several voice lines attributed to Ezio have also been discovered. These include him saying things like, “She wanted you to have a life,” and a poignant invitation: “Come. Leap with me. One last time for an old man.” He’s also reportedly quoted as saying, “They always fear what they cannot control. They called us demons once, too. But remember, Elsa: ‘Nothing is true, everything is permitted.’”
Just because these voice lines exist doesn’t necessarily mean Ezio will physically appear in the game. Given the way Assassin’s Creed stories often work, he could appear in memories, flashbacks, or as a spectral presence connected to ancient Isu technology.
Anika’s words reveal the story centers around witch hunts, as she states, “They call me a witch. They want to burn me for what I can do. For what I know.” Jonathan has pointed out that the story for Codename Hexe is expected to be a significant improvement over recent installments like Shadows, Mirage, Valhalla, and Odyssey. The story will also feature a character named Wolfgang.
Gameplay in Codename Hexe appears to take place largely in forests, and players can improve their ability to swing between trees using a skill tree. Missions will involve locating special ritual sites and retrieving stolen artifacts. The game also features enhanced NPC characters who can report even small, potentially suspicious events.
The story’s magical elements are highlighted by lines like, “Form a circle, do not let her vanish,” “They say the forest moves at night,” and “Check the shadows! She can’t have gone far.” These phrases emphasize the mystical atmosphere and suggest a hunt is underway.
Developing Assassin’s Creed Codename Hexe has been challenging, and the team has experienced a number of people leaving. Recent reports suggest around 50 developers have left the project. Ubisoft is now aiming to release the game in June 2027, according to the same reports.
The upcoming Assassin’s Creed game, currently known as Hexe, is expected to be released on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. Ubisoft is also considering a version for the next Nintendo Switch console.
