A standout feature of Assassin’s Creed Shadows, and one that hasn’t gotten enough attention, is its incredibly realistic weather system. It’s among the very best we’ve seen in any game.
Most players might not notice, but Ubisoft did a fantastic job crafting the expansive open world of Shadows. It feels truly dynamic, changing not just with daily weather, but also with the passing of seasons.
In a new video, the game developer explained how they built a key system using Ubisoft’s Anvil engine. It’s a fascinating look behind the scenes, particularly for anyone interested in the technical details of creating open-world games.
If you’re new to the game, Shadows features a realistic weather system that changes as it does in real life. Many other open-world games only seem to have changing weather, but it’s usually tied to where you are in the game world.
In Shadows, the weather is always changing, even while you’re playing. If it rains, you’ll see mist appear later in the day. And when the sun comes out, puddles will gradually dry up.
The game becomes even more immersive with the changing seasons. As you play, the depiction of Japan will shift through spring, summer, autumn, and winter, each with unique weather patterns and effects.
Think about snowfall – it really fills up space in winter, covering things like paths, rocks, and trees. That same idea of things being gradually hidden or buried can also be used when designing characters in games or animations.
Ubisoft announced in the video that they plan to build on the technology from Shadows, meaning we can expect to see similar, realistic weather effects in their upcoming games.
It’s likely that Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Resynced will include all of these features. We’re especially excited about the possibility of completely dynamic weather while sailing the open ocean!
