Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 2 Will Officially Introduce A Major Book 3 Character

The second season of Netflix’s live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender will feature a significant character who didn’t appear until the third season of the original animated series. The original Avatar was split into three parts, each following Aang as he learned to control water, earth, and fire. However, the new live-action show is taking a different approach. Instead of three long seasons with around 20 episodes each, the first season has eight episodes that are about an hour long. The upcoming second season will be even shorter, with just seven episodes.

It’s not surprising that Netflix’s live-action version of Avatar: The Last Airbender changes things around from the original cartoon. For example, the first season spends more time exploring Aang’s spiritual side than his waterbending training, which builds towards encounters with spirits later in the series. While mostly sticking to the cartoon’s original order of events, the show also adds new scenes and even pulls storylines forward from later seasons, like showing the Fire Nation’s attack on the Air Nomads.

Okay, so it looks like season two of the Avatar: The Last Airbender Netflix series is going to pull from the ‘Fire’ book of the original – and maybe even lean into it a bit more than season one did. I was rewatching the trailer, and at the 1:13 mark, there’s this quick shot – you could easily miss it – that shows The Painted Lady! For those who don’t remember, she’s a character Aang and the gang meet when they’re traveling through the Fire Nation in the original series. Specifically, she appears in season three, episode three, ‘The Painted Lady,’ where they stumble upon a village suffering because of a Fire Nation weapons factory polluting their river. It’s a cool little detail that shows they’re really digging into the source material.

The story introduces the Painted Lady, a river spirit who protects the town during difficult times. Katara, a skilled waterbender, takes on the appearance of the Painted Lady to help the villagers struggling under hardship. She provides food, heals the ill, and uses her abilities to shut down a harmful factory. While her actions almost lead to trouble, this experience is crucial for Katara’s growth as a person, and she receives gratitude from the true Painted Lady at the end.

Adding the Painted Lady to Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender is great news, especially since Katara didn’t get enough screen time in the first season. However, this change could significantly alter the story and potentially speed up the group’s journey to the Fire Nation.

How The Painted Lady’s Introduction Changes Avatar: The Last Airbender’s Timeline

Similar to season 2 of Avatar: The Last Airbender, the upcoming third season will have fewer episodes. Even though each episode on Netflix is longer than those on Nickelodeon, there’s still a lot of story to tell in the final 14 episodes.

The brief glimpse of the Painted Lady in the season 2 trailer hints that Aang and his friends will travel to the Fire Nation earlier than expected – during this season, instead of waiting until season 3. This likely gives the show enough time in its final seven episodes to fully cover important storylines like the Lion Turtles, Aang’s previous lives, his training with Zuko, and the events leading up to and during Sozin’s Comet. All of this will build towards the epic showdown between Aang and Fire Lord Ozai, and the ultimate battle against the Fire Nation.

The reported episode titles for Avatar: The Last Airbender season 3 support this structure, as most allude to events that happen during the second half of “Book Three” (via Knight Edge Media). For instance, episode 2 is reportedly titled “Eight Minutes,” which refers to the eight-minute window during which a solar eclipse prevents firebenders from using their powers. This is covered in the two-episode arc “The Day of the Black Sun” in “Book Three,” chapters 10 and 11.

It’s also possible that the story of The Painted Lady in the Netflix adaptation takes place in an Earth Kingdom village instead of the Fire Nation. However, this change could lessen the story’s impact. A key part of the third season of the original series is Katara and her friends discovering that even people within the Fire Nation suffer under the Fire Lord’s war. When Ozai’s troops destroy a factory, they readily pollute a river and attack the nearby villagers, and it’s only Katara’s group that intervenes to save them.

It’s good to see that Netflix’s live-action adaptation of The Last Airbender isn’t cutting out all the side stories from the original animated series. These extra storylines in Avatar often help develop the characters, and the episode “The Painted Lady” is a great example. Katara is a strong and vital character in Avatar: The Last Airbender, and this episode gives her the focus she deserves.

Avatar: The Last Airbender season 2 premieres on June 25, 2026, only on Netflix.
