The newest trailer for Avengers: Doomsday focuses on the story’s main villain, with Robert Downey Jr. making a comeback to the Marvel Cinematic Universe – this time playing Doctor Doom. This marks the first time the MCU will feature Victor von Doom in the Multiverse Saga, and it’s a surprising twist to have Downey Jr. take on the role.
Marvel Studios is continuing to promote its upcoming 2026 film, Avengers: Doomsday, by showing trailers before screenings of Avatar: Fire and Ash. This is the third week they’ve used this strategy. The latest teaser focuses on actors from the X-Men, hinting at their role in the new Avengers movie.

The preview showcases the X-Mansion, also known as Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters. Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, and James Marsden return as Professor X, Magneto, and Cyclops, respectively, from the original X-Men films.
Patrick Stewart’s Professor X is seen in a blue jacket featuring the iconic black-and-red X symbol, while Ian McKellen’s Magneto sports a longer hairstyle – a new look for the actor since he last played the role in 2000.
Erik and Charles are shown together again, and Scott Summers appears in his classic comic book costume. He fires a powerful blast at a Sentinel, and the trailer concludes with the message: “The X-Men Will Return In Avengers: Doomsday,” followed by the familiar countdown from previous teasers.
The initial trailer for Avengers: Doomsday showed that Chris Evans’ character, Steve Rogers, would be involved, even though the actor had previously said he wouldn’t be. The second trailer focused on Chris Hemsworth reprising his role as Thor within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
At San Diego Comic-Con 2024, Robert Downey Jr. surprised fans by announcing his return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe – not as Iron Man, but as Doctor Doom. This change in casting came after the storyline for Avengers: Doomsday was reworked following the firing of Jonathan Majors, who had been set to play Kang.
Filming for Avengers: Doomsday wrapped up in September 2025, and production on Avengers: Secret Wars is scheduled to begin the following summer. They also plan to shoot some extra scenes for Doomsday in the spring.
Robert Downey Jr. is set to reprise his role as Doctor Doom in the concluding film of Phase 6. While the complete cast for Avengers: Secret Wars hasn’t been announced yet, Tom Holland will star in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which arrives on July 31st and will be the last Marvel movie released before the two Avengers films.
Marvel Studios has scheduled Avengers: Doomsday to open on December 18, 2026.
