Fans of period dramas, rejoice! The BBC is officially making a series based on ‘The Ministry of Time,’ and filming is expected to begin this year. This is great news for those still hoping for more from shows like ‘Bridgerton’ and adaptations like ‘Wuthering Heights’.
Kaliane Bradley’s popular sci-fi romance novel is becoming a TV series. Alice Birch, who wrote the acclaimed series Normal People, will adapt the book for the screen. Lindsay Salt, head of BBC Drama, told Deadline that filming is expected to begin later in 2024.
We’ll learn who will play the main character and Commander Graham Gore later, as the casting process is still underway.
Bradley’s first novel takes place shortly after the invention of time travel. It centers on a government worker called a “Bridge” who helps people from the past – called “expats” – adjust to the present day. These expats would have otherwise died in their original time periods.

Unexpected challenges emerge when the main character meets Graham Gore, an explorer who was lost on a historical Arctic expedition. Together, they navigate a drastically changed Britain, grappling with modern issues of race, imperialism, gender, religion, and sexuality.
Bradley expressed his excitement about “The Ministry of Time” finding a home on screen, calling the collaboration between A24, the BBC, and Alice Birch a “dream come true.”
Graham Gore would likely have been pleased as well, once someone had taken the time to explain it to him.
Screenwriter Birch expressed their excitement about adapting Kaliane’s wonderful book for the BBC and A24. They described the book as beautiful, funny, joyful, and deeply moving, saying it was an exhilarating and heartbreaking read, and they can’t wait to share the story on screen.
The Ministry of Time is available to buy now.
