Today, June 26th, BBC News initiated the initial stage of its paid subscription service in the U.S., meaning that users will have to sign up and pay to gain access to the content available on BBC.com.
The privately financed site is said to attract over 60 million American viewers, functioning independently of the BBC’s British-based operations.
As a devoted admirer, I’d like to share an intriguing tidbit I recently came across. Previously, The Guardian had reported that the powers that be at BBC were contemplating a novel move – potentially asking their US-based audience to part with some funds, as early as this month. This was all in an effort to bolster the organization’s financial resources.
In this preliminary phase, guests can choose either a yearly subscription of $49.99 or a monthly one at $8.99. With these subscriptions, they will receive unrestricted access to our site’s content and live streaming of the BBC News channel.
In the upcoming period, we’ll be experimenting and gathering insights based on viewer habits. As part of this, the BBC has announced that they will be providing access to ad-free documentary series and films (including the entire BBC Select documentary library), early release podcasts without ads, exclusive newsletters, and unique content in the near future.
