Best Open-World Game Ever Made Now Free With PlayStation Plus

Okay, so the absolute best open-world game ever is now free with PlayStation Plus! It’s available on both PS4 and PS5 if you’re on the Extra or Premium tiers – seriously, if you’re subscribed to those, you need to check this out. It’s considered one of the greatest games of all time, across any genre. Sadly, if you only have the Essential tier, you’re out of luck this time. But for those of us on the higher tiers, the full game is available to download and play as much as we want, for a limited time, which is awesome!

Man, it’s crazy to think it’s been eight years since 2018! That feels like the peak of the PS4 era. But back then, Red Dead Redemption 2 came out and totally changed what an open-world game could be. Honestly, nothing has come close since. We’ve seen some amazing open-world titles, like Crimson Desert recently, but they just don’t quite measure up. I really think GTA 6 is the only game that’s going to surpass it when it drops later this year, and then that will be the new standard until Rockstar releases Red Dead Redemption 3 or GTA 7. It’s like Rockstar just keeps raising the bar!

If you haven’t played Red Dead Redemption 2 yet, now’s a great chance! It’s currently available at no extra cost for PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium subscribers as part of the May 2026 lineup. We don’t know how long the game will stay available through these subscriptions – neither PlayStation nor Rockstar Games has announced a timeframe. Most PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium games are available for 12-24 months, but Rockstar has previously offered deals lasting 3 or 6 months. Regardless, you’ll have plenty of time to experience the main story (around 50 hours) or explore with side content (80-85 hours). Players aiming for 100% completion might hope it stays available longer, as that takes approximately 200 hours.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is widely considered one of the greatest games ever made. It has a Metacritic score of 97, has won over 175 ‘Game of the Year’ awards, and had one of the biggest launches in video game history. It’s also the fourth best-selling game of all time. Considering both its critical acclaim and huge commercial success, it’s generally ranked as the second-best game ever, just behind another Rockstar Games hit, GTA 5.
