Beyond Paradise teases Humphrey’s resignation – but is there a twist in store?

Honestly, after weeks of being relentlessly pressured by that awful Mr. Smith, I finally had to make a decision about who was getting the boot from the Shipton Abbott police station. I’d put it off as long as humanly possible, but he wouldn’t let up!

After the DI’s department lost funding, he went to see his boss at The Hub during the next-to-last episode of Beyond Paradise season 4, carrying a file with him.

The note revealed who was being kicked out, and how their departure would damage the strong bond the group had formed.

Humphrey showed no sign of regret or guilt. He actually seemed completely content with what he’d done, even smiling at Mr. Smith – a surprising change from the sadness he’d been displaying recently.

However, we didn’t find out who was in that folder during the show. Just as Mr. Smith was about to open it, the episode ended. But a preview for next week’s finale suggested the detective will make a selfless sacrifice to save his coworkers and friends.

Oh Humphrey, the man that you are.

Honestly, when Mr. Smith strolled in and basically took over Humphrey’s desk, saying “Change can be difficult, but I’m here to help,” it felt… well, incredibly unhelpful. It was one of those moments where his words just didn’t match the situation at all, and everyone in Shipton Abbot could feel the tension rise. As a cinema devotee, I’ve seen that setup a million times – the smug newcomer who thinks they’re fixing things but just makes everything worse! It was a really ironic thing to say, considering how much discomfort he was causing.

Honestly, when Mr. Smith said that, I just felt Kelby’s heart sink – he was clearly upset. And I remember Esther and I both thinking, “There has to be another way!” It just didn’t feel right.

As I mentioned earlier this season, Humphrey’s story isn’t finished. He’s definitely not retiring from detective work anytime soon. However, it remained to be seen how things would ultimately be resolved.

Anne wondered aloud to Margo if they should let Mr. Smith know something was up with Martha’s mother – especially considering the dinner invitation. It seemed like she was hiding something.

Earlier in the show, Anne had invited him to dinner with Humphrey and Martha – beef Wellington and pavlova – hoping it would help Humphrey get along better with his boss. He happily agreed. But before they started eating, Anne asked everyone to put their phones in a box, something she’d read about in a magazine, and then she took the box away.

Anne can be a bit unusual, but her recent behavior, especially when it happened, is definitely suspicious. Also, last week she attempted to tell Humphrey something sensitive about Mr. Smith, and that conversation hasn’t been followed up on.

Alright Anne, it’s your turn. You’ve been holding back, but now it’s time to share your thoughts and ideas.

Beyond Paradise season 4 airs on BBC One and iPlayer at 8pm on Friday.
