During the usual summer movie season, many new franchise installments were released and performed well at the box office. However, this year has also been marked by several original films achieving blockbuster status, not just in horror but across various genres. One of the top-earning titles of the summer is the racing drama titled “F1: The Movie“. Unlike other movies from director Joseph Kosinski that are part of established film series, this one stands alone. Interestingly, it was strategically released in theaters during summer and has surpassed one of the year’s most anticipated sequels in terms of earnings.
Currently, the movie F1 has amassed approximately $604.8 million globally at the box office (according to The Numbers). This surpasses the $597.9 million earned by Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning. In a surprising turn of events, Brad Pitt has surpassed his Interview With a Vampire co-star Tom Cruise in box office earnings – with Top Gun: Maverick, directed by Cruise’s former director, contributing to this success for Brad Pitt.
How F1‘s Box Office Compares to Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning
In supporting the success of “The Final Reckoning,” it’s evident that its international appeal played a significant role. The movie raked in an impressive $418.9 million from foreign markets, edging out “Mission: Impossible” by $18.4 million. Domestically, however, the roles were reversed, with “F1” taking the lead, earning $186 million compared to “The Final Reckoning’s” $197.4 million. This disparity can be attributed to Formula One’s widespread global popularity. Although Tom Cruise is undeniably a major Hollywood star, Formula One holds a comparable position in the world of sports. It may have garnered more attention in the United States recently, but on an international scale, Formula One remains a significantly larger phenomenon-resulting in “The Final Reckoning” being more attractive to overseas audiences than domestic viewers.
It’s not surprising that F1 was a box office success, but it’s surprising nonetheless to see it outperform The Final Reckoning. As the eighth installment of Mission: Impossible, F1 was heavily promoted as the equivalent of Avengers: Endgame for the long-running action series, wrapping up decades-old storylines and character arcs. In contrast, The Final Reckoning leaves room for future films but functions as a conclusion. It seems that Paramount aimed to make The Final Reckoning feel like a significant event following Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning getting overshadowed by the Barbenheimer craze and not meeting expectations.
If “The Final Reckoning” had received more positive audience feedback, it could have potentially outperformed “F1” at the box office. Despite the latest “Mission: Impossible” film receiving an 80% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, some viewers felt it was a slight letdown compared to previous installments in the series. In contrast, “F1” scored higher on Rotten Tomatoes (83%) and was praised as an entertaining throwback summer blockbuster, with strong performances from Brad Pitt and his co-star Damson Idris. Had “The Final Reckoning” been as well-received as “Mission: Impossible – Fallout” or “Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation,” it might have increased its domestic earnings or reduced the international gap slightly. The difference in earnings between the two films is just under $7 million, making their box office performance quite close.
This year, Warner Bros. has set a record, and among its successes, the film F1 stands out as one of the studio’s most significant box office achievements. Demonstrating that there’s still room for an original blockbuster during the summer season, it has become Brad Pitt’s highest-grossing movie to date and given director Steven Kosinski more industry influence to work on projects like his untitled UFO conspiracy thriller. Beating a Mission: Impossible film is another impressive accomplishment for F1, and it will be intriguing to see if Kosinski’s next project also becomes a massive success.
