Get ready to don a smile, as Vince Gilligan’s latest show, Wycaro, is about to unveil its first glimpse! The official account of the Breaking Bad creator took to social media for the first time in over a year to drop a mysterious teaser for this Apple TV+ series. Co-created by Gilligan and Better Call Saul star Rhea Seehorn, Wycaro has been compared to The X-Files and The Twilight Zone.
While some fans speculated that the image – depicting a cotton swab forming a smiley face with the phrase “happiness is contagious” – hinted at a new Breaking Bad spinoff, Apple clarified that this teaser is actually for the Albuquerque-based Wycaro 339. To build anticipation, they held a live YouTube countdown leading up to Friday, July 25.
Stepping into the role of a film critic, I’d rephrase it as follows: “In stark contrast to the gritty drug-ridden world of ‘Breaking Bad’ and ‘Better Call Saul’, my upcoming sci-fi series, shot in Albuquerque, New Mexico, will be devoid of crime and methamphetamine.
Happiness is contagious.

In the initial episode, the world undergoes a swift transformation, making it unlike anything before, as he explained. This alteration, we hope, will generate intrigue and suspense, unfolding over numerous following episodes.
Sony Pictures Television was responsible for the creation of both Gilligan’s shows aired on AMC, namely Wycaro, and also produced these titles. Previously serving as co-heads of Sony Pictures TV, Jamie Erlicht and Zack Van Amburg, who are now in charge of worldwide video programming at Apple’s streaming platform, gave the go-ahead for both Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul while they were still with Sony, before their departure in 2017.
In 2022, Gilligan hinted that the as-yet-unnamed science fiction series he was working on would be a stark contrast to both Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul.
Wycaro is said to be similar to Gilligan’s time on the sci-fi drama, The X-Files. During his tenure, he worked as a writer, producer, and director before co-creating the 2001 spinoff, The Lone Gunmen. The upcoming show has been characterized as an examination of “the human condition” that shares similar themes of manipulating reality while reflecting on humanity.
Instead of being like “The X-Files”, the new series deviates by taking place within our reality but adding a twist. This Apple TV+ show has been characterized as a “combination of realistic drama and genre elements,” much like “The Twilight Zone.” Unlike a moral story, “Wycaro” combines drama with humor, primarily focusing on people and examining the human condition in an unconventional, surprising manner.
As a passionate cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that the captivating series “Wycaro” has been granted a two-season, direct-to-streaming greenlight, set to debut on Apple TV+ towards the end of this year. Can’t wait!
