Fergus tragically dies trying to save his children from the flames, falling through the burning roof – a change from the original story where he survives. Despite the loss, Fergus dies a hero, ensuring his family’s escape.

I recently read a really insightful interview with Sophie Skelton, who plays Brianna on Outlander. ScreenRant’s Tatiana Hullender chatted with her before episode eight aired, and they discussed how Brianna was dealing with the tragic loss of Fergus. It sounds like his death is going to have a huge ripple effect on the rest of the season, especially since this is the final one! Brianna’s Reaction To Fergus‘ Death Showcases How She’s Grown

Losing Fergus was a huge blow to the Frasers, but as a viewer, it really highlighted how much Brianna has matured. She truly stepped up as the family’s rock, bravely comforting Marsali even though she was devastated by losing her brother. It was also incredibly moving to see her finally open up to Roger, sharing all her feelings – the good with the bad – with him. It felt like a pivotal moment for their relationship.

How Brianna & William’s Relationship Deepens Like Never Before

Episode five was really touching! I loved seeing Brianna and William finally connect as siblings. They had a long overdue talk about finding out Frank Randall – and the man William knew as his father, Lord John Grey – weren’t actually their biological dads. It was a big moment for both of them. Brianna opened up about what it was like grappling with her own identity, and she really helped William realize he could love both Lord John and Jamie Fraser, his biological father. It was beautiful to see William start to make peace with his complicated family, and it gave Brianna some comfort about her own situation, too. It felt like a really important step for both of them.

Skelton described developing the characters’ relationship as deeply healing, and it really shows how much Bri has matured throughout the show.

Playing Brianna in the final season was incredibly fulfilling. It was amazing to look back at her journey and see how much she’d changed and grown as a person. I’m really proud of the woman she’s become. Watching the scenes, it struck me how similar young William was to Brianna – making the same mistakes she did when she was figuring things out as a teenager and learning about her family history. But I felt a lot of empathy for him, because those years are tough no matter what. It’s created a really beautiful and unique connection between them, something we don’t often see in Outlander. It was wonderful to watch their relationship develop, especially knowing how much Brianna has always wanted a sibling – it felt really special.

Everything Else Skelton Said About Outlander‘s Eighth And Final Season

ScreenRant asked about the character Roger and a scene where she hasn’t committed to staying in the present time, even if it means facing danger. They were curious about why Roger and the other character feel so at home in this particular era, and what makes it a good fit for them.

I think, at its core, Brianna truly believes that home is where the people you love are. After experiencing so much loss throughout the different time periods, and especially with Fergus’s death, she feels even more strongly that family is the most important thing. She also realizes Roger would be very lonely without a support system if they went back. She knows him well enough to worry he might impulsively leave if something happened to her, so she’s trying to protect him. In that moment, she wants to ensure he and their children have people around them, and she feels she understands his needs better than he does himself. She’s essentially asking him to promise he’ll take care of himself when she’s gone, and that he’ll allow their family to support him and keep her memory alive through them.

In the eighth episode, Jamie discovers Frank dedicated his book to Bri, suggesting he anticipated her return and prepared her for what was to come – something Bri herself doesn’t seem to realize. The interviewer then asked the actress playing Jamie how it felt to see this connection come full circle, and whether she knew what the future held for her character.

Sophie Skelton believes Brianna quickly figured out Frank knew about her true father, Jamie. She points out that Frank’s efforts to teach Brianna skills like riding and shooting weren’t just random – he was preparing her for a life in the past. Skelton sees this as Frank’s ultimate act of love – setting aside his own feelings to ensure Brianna’s safety and ability to find Jamie. She also thinks it’s fitting that Brianna is unaware the book is dedicated to her, as it highlights Frank’s selfless preparation.

It seems Bri is hesitant to finish or even start reading the book, possibly because it represents the last connection she has to Frank. She likely hasn’t gotten to the part that would reveal it’s meant for her, and she may not have fully understood the extent of Frank’s sacrifice. The book feels like a final gesture of acceptance from Frank to Jamie, which would be incredibly meaningful to Bri. She’s been carefully navigating the complex relationship between Jamie and Frank, worried about causing insecurity. Ultimately, the book feels like a beautiful act of forgiveness and a comforting embrace between them all.

It feels like a real relief for Brianna to finally call Frank ‘Father,’ and Jamie’s reaction to it shows how much everyone has grown. In the past, that simple act would have been difficult for Jamie, but now he seems completely comfortable with it. It highlights how far their relationships have come and how much they’ve all matured, including Jamie himself.
