Bungie Is Not Making Destiny 3, Dev to Be Rocked by ‘Significant’ Layoffs

After news that Bungie will be reducing support for Destiny 2 in June, a recent Bloomberg report clarified that the developer’s plans for a “new beginning” don’t involve creating a Destiny 3.

According to Jason Schreier, who spoke with people familiar with the situation, Bungie doesn’t have a new project ready for the Destiny 2 team to start working on once development ends next month. Employees are now proposing and starting to develop new ideas, some of which could expand the Destiny universe, but Schreier reports that Bungie isn’t planning to begin work on a Destiny 3 right away.

Bungie is dedicating some of its Destiny 2 developers to work on Marathon, signaling continued investment in the new project. According to reports, several Destiny 2 team members have already transitioned to Marathon, with more expected to join them soon.

Bungie will be reducing its workforce again with another round of layoffs. While the exact number of jobs affected isn’t clear, reports indicate these cuts are substantial and linked to the end of active development on the game Destiny 2. Bungie has experienced layoffs several times in recent years, leading to a shrinking company size.

Sony bought Bungie for $3.6 billion a few years ago, hoping it would help them create popular ongoing service games. So far, Helldivers 2 is the only real success, and the overall effort has largely been unsuccessful.

With Bungie figuring out its next steps, Sony has increased its involvement with the development team recently. A third Destiny game was hoped to revitalize Bungie, but reports suggest it hasn’t even been officially approved, and may not happen at all.
