Casper fans, rise up. Our time has come.
Disney Plus has greenlit a live-action series based on the popular ghost character, following a competitive bidding process with five different companies.
Steven Spielberg, known for the classic 1995 film, will be back as an executive producer. Rob Letterman and Hilary Winston, the executive producers of the Disney Plus series Goosebumps, are writing and also executive producing the new project.
I’m really excited about the new Casper series! From what I’ve read, it’s going to be a fresh take on the classic story, but with a much darker and more modern vibe. It sounds like they’re aiming for something similar to what Netflix did with Wednesday and the Addams Family, which I think could be amazing for Casper – a really cool twist on a character we all know and love!
The series is still being developed and hasn’t been officially approved yet.

Casper the friendly ghost first appeared in a series of animated shorts made by Famous Studios from 1945 to 1959.
I’ve always loved Casper the friendly ghost! Over the years, he’s popped up everywhere – in comics, cartoons, and even a live-action movie back in 1995. That film had Christina Ricci and Devon Sawa, and Malachi Pearson actually provided Casper’s voice – it’s a fun one to revisit!
Okay, so we don’t know who’s going to be in this new series yet, but I did read an interview with Devon Sawa where he basically said he’s moved on from playing Casper – which, honestly, makes sense! He feels like he’s aged out of that role.
You know, it’s funny running into Christina Ricci now and then. It feels like no time has passed at all – we just pick up right where we left off. She’s truly fantastic, and I’m so incredibly proud of everything she’s accomplished. It’s really inspiring to see her doing so well.
