Nintendo describes its rationale for the acquisitions as follows:

Currently, there are no plans to expand the size of Awaji in Year Two. The team is focused on creating and supporting post-launch content, but it won’t be a large-scale expansion like those offered with season passes in the past, according to a recent interview with YouTuber JorRaptor.

It originally premiered on Netflix in the US in April 2021 and gained a good following, but was removed in April 2024 when its licensing agreement ended. Now, without a lot of promotion, Netflix has added the movie back to its selection.
