Classic 15-Year-Old RPG Series Returns With New PS5 & Switch 2 Release

Over the past year, we’ve seen a lot of updated versions of older games released for the upcoming Switch 2. Nintendo has re-released its popular first-party titles, and other games that couldn’t originally run on the original Switch are now available. This is actually a good thing! These re-releases are already well-loved and successful, making them a safe bet for players. Recently, another critically acclaimed RPG series announced that two of its games are getting enhanced versions for both the Switch 2 and PlayStation 5.

NIS America revealed on May 5th that updated versions of The Legend of Heroes: Trails from Zero and its sequel, The Legend of Heroes: Trails to Azure, are coming to PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch. These popular JRPGs, the 4th and 5th games in the Trails series, first launched in Japan for the PSP in 2011. They were later released in the West in 2022 and 2023, and now they’re being remastered for current consoles with improvements, expected to arrive sometime this year.

2 More Legend of Heroes Games To Get Enhanced PS5 & Switch 2 Re-Release

Man, the last few years have been amazing if you’re a Trails fan like me! We finally got a complete remake of the first game, Trails in the Sky: 1st Chapter, and it was a huge hit on Steam. Now, the remake of the sequel, Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter, is coming out on September 17th, which I’m super excited about. But it doesn’t stop there! Falcom is also bringing some of the newer games to consoles, and they’ve officially announced that Trails from Zero and Trails to Azure are on the list too!

These two classic Japanese role-playing games originally came out on the PSP in 2011, but weren’t widely available outside of Japan until recently. Trails from Zero received its first English release on PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch in 2022, and Trails to Azure followed a year later. While you can still play them on PlayStation 5 and the new Switch through backwards compatibility, they were made for older consoles and show their age. That’s why it’s great to see these games getting updated and improved for current platforms.

NISA is releasing updated versions of Trails from Zero and Trails to Azure for PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2. These “definitive editions” will feature better performance, sharper graphics, and enhanced textures to take full advantage of modern hardware. While a specific release date hasn’t been announced, both games are currently planned for a 2026 launch, and it’s likely they’ll be released on the same day considering the simultaneous announcement trailers.

Remakes of the first two Trails games are already planned, and updated versions of games four and five are coming soon. Fans are eager to hear if a remake of Trails in the Sky the 3rd is also in development. If it is, all five main games in this popular Japanese RPG series will be easier for Western players to access than ever before.
