One of the original actors from Star Trek is set to repeat their character for a future audio drama that delves into the uncharted past of the famous antagonist Khan, a legendary adversary.
Actor Naveen Andrews, known for his roles in Lost and The Dropout, will take on the role of a shrewd opponent to Captain Kirk, a character that has been portrayed by Ricardo Montalban in The Wrath of Khan and Benedict Cumberbatch in Star Trek Into Darkness.
The narrative takes place during the time span of approximately 15 years, between when Khan made his first appearance in the 1967 Star Trek: The Original Series episode “Space Seed,” and his ominous reemergence in the second Star Trek film that followed.
Due to the precise nature of the timeline, legendary Star Trek actor George Takei will once again play the character Hikaru Sulu in a podcast series. His participation was officially announced during San Diego Comic-Con this past weekend.
In the complete trailer for the audio drama (available below), you’ll notice Takei’s voice, along with that of returning Star Trek favorite, Tim Russ, known for his roles as Tuvok in both Star Trek: Voyager and Star Trek: Picard on television.
The brief overview for Star Trek: Khan suggests it will delve into the unspoken happenings on Ceti Alpha V, a planet where Captain Kirk banished Khan and his companions in Space Seed. This storyline will trace Khan’s transformation from a “superhuman visionary” to a “revenge-seeking antagonist.
In this alternate version, Wrenn Schmidt acts alongside Andrews, portraying Marla McGivers – a previous lieutenant from Kirk’s spaceship. She chooses to deceive her fellow crew members for the sake of being close to the mysterious Khan.
In this production, Sonya Cassidy plays the role of Dr. Rosalind Lear, Olli Haaskivi portrays Delmonda, Maury Sterling is cast as Ivan, Mercy Malick takes on the character of Ursula, and Zuri Washington acts as Madot. Kirsten Beyer and David Mack are responsible for the scriptwriting.
A pair of writers are transforming a narrative originally crafted by Nicholas Meyer, the writer of “The Wrath of Khan”, in hopes that this transformation results in an appropriate prelude for the 1982 sci-fi masterpiece.
The podcast is set to debut on Star Trek Day, a term used because it commemorates the airdate of the original series’ premiere. For those unfamiliar, this day is observed annually on September 8th.
