New screenshots have surfaced online showing gameplay from Contraband, the cooperative game Avalanche Studios was developing for Xbox before it was cancelled. A former user interface developer posted the images in their portfolio, and MP1st collected them. These are the best looks we’ve had so far at how the game was shaping up, revealing features like a four-player team setup, how players would find and join matches, and a progression system with ranks like Hustler, Bandit, Smuggler, and Baron.
One screen mentions a “Downtown” area, suggesting the game will feature a city map that plays a role in its missions.
The game’s interface really nails the 1970s heist feel they’re going for. Think bold fonts, character cards that look like movie posters, and a grainy filter over everything – it makes you feel like a smuggler, even before you start playing. I noticed some of the character art seemed a little familiar, like it was originally made for fan projects. So, it’s probably not the final look, but it does give you a good idea of the overall style they were aiming for. It seems like they had a pretty clear visual direction early on.
All of this arrives in the wake of Contraband’s shutdown earlier this year.
Ultimately, even without seeing the game in action, the user interface reveals a lot about Contraband. It was shaping up to be a cooperative game focused on teamwork, where your character’s identity, rank, and the shared game lobby were just as important as the weapons and vehicles. It appears to be a promising, stylish open-world heist game, but unfortunately, we’re only seeing glimpses of it through the menus, not actual gameplay.
