While still a continuation of Remedy’s popular 2019 game, Control Resonant offers a fresh experience. Instead of the Oldest House, players now venture through a distorted Manhattan, facing familiar enemies like the Hiss and Mold – but they’re much more challenging this time around. What really stands out, though, is how Remedy has expanded the game’s world and story.
Manhattan stands out with its unique design, drawing inspiration from art, film, and other sources. It also features distinct enemy interactions, making it a truly different experience. According to lead level designer Anne-Marie Grönroos, envision Manhattan as a location overtaken by a mysterious, potentially new, paranormal force – one that may or may not have been present in the previous game.
This game features several different factions. While you’ll find all of them in certain areas, the number of factions present varies from zone to zone.
With the strange occurrences from The Oldest House spilling into Manhattan, we needed to expand how we approached the game’s world,” explains art director Elmeri Raitanen. “It’s no longer just about the FBC trying to contain things; we’ve created a more detailed and believable world with its own past, where various groups are competing for power.”
The new content directly addresses a common complaint about the original game: not enough different enemies. According to lead gameplay animator Annika Lehtinen, players can expect a significantly larger number of creatures to fight, and surprisingly, even a bus will be among them.
This definitely made things tricky for the animators, as they had limited control over how the bus moved. While many of the enemies, called Hiss, are creatures, the team still used motion capture for some of their movements. They especially praised motion capture artist Thomas Nielson, who was key in creating the enemies’ jerky, glitching motions.
Remedy Entertainment’s Control Resonant is coming to Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC later this year. They’ve also explained how New Game Plus will work, letting players unlock new abilities, an extra slot for Artifacts, and other ways to customize their character. Expect tougher enemies, and bosses with new strategies, meaning you’ll need to adapt your gameplay. You can find more information here.
