Coronation Street’s Channique Sterling-Brown opens up on ITV soap exit and why she has chosen to leave

Coronation Street viewers were saddened by the news that Channique Sterling-Brown is leaving her part as Dee-Dee Bailey after playing the character for three years.

The character quickly became a fan favourite, and in 2023, Sterling-Brown was recognised for their performance with a British Soap Award for Best Newcomer.

I decided back in the spring, and it wasn’t a quick choice,” Sterling-Brown said. “I spent a couple of months thinking it over after they offered me a contract for next year before I even replied. I was really conflicted, but I just felt like it was the right time to move on.

As someone who really relies on my faith, making this decision wasn’t easy. I spent a lot of time thinking and praying about it. Eventually, I felt a strong sense of peace, like I’d finished what I set out to do and accomplished my purpose. That feeling gave me the courage to finally take the leap.

The actress shared that she’s looking forward to growing her career and trying new things.

Being fairly young, I’m approaching this with a positive attitude,” Sterling-Brown explained. “I’d really like to perform on stage again. While working with Telly is great, it’s just not the same as the experience of being live on stage.

I’m really eager to work on a movie – whether it’s a dramatic role or something funny. The film industry is huge, and while I don’t have specific projects in mind, I definitely have personal goals I’m working towards.

Okay, so everyone’s been asking about Dee-Dee’s ending, and I have to tell you, Sterling-Brown is keeping things pretty close to the vest. She wouldn’t give me any specifics, but she did say whatever happens is a fitting conclusion to her character’s story – and that’s all she’s sharing for now!

No air date has been confirmed for Dee-Dee’s final episode.
