Pearl Abyss is celebrating the success of Crimson Desert and has given its employees a bonus of 5 million Won as a reward. This bonus acknowledges the game selling 5 million copies. CEO Heo Jin-young expressed his gratitude to the team, but also emphasized that there’s still much work to be done.
He shared his sincere appreciation for the dedication of everyone involved in creating their popular product. To celebrate reaching 5 million sales, he announced a bonus for all employees who consistently contributed their skills and hard work.
This isn’t the finish line. The progress we’ve made today will be key to helping us succeed and overcome future obstacles.
According to recent reports, Pearl Abyss has distributed bonuses totaling 3.7 billion Won (approximately $2.5 million) to its 733 employees. The company is also planning additional bonuses, with the next one expected in early 2027 if they meet their financial goals for 2026.
Earlier this month, the studio announced that Crimson Desert had sold 5 million copies. They also posted on social media to thank players for their support.
I’m so excited to hear that Crimson Desert has already sold over 5 million copies! Pearl Abyss recently announced it, and they thanked all of us ‘Greymanes’ – that’s what they call the fans – for joining them on this adventure in the world of Pywel. They really emphasized how much our support means to them, and honestly, it’s awesome to be part of a community that’s helped the game reach such a big milestone. It’s cool to know we all made this happen!
The game reached this major milestone only a month after the developer, Heo, mentioned aiming for 5 million copies sold during a company update. He also revealed they were exploring the possibility of bringing the game to a future Nintendo Switch 2, but acknowledged the Switch’s less powerful hardware might require some compromises in the game’s features.
Pearl Abyss continues to add free content to Crimson Desert, which launched on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S on March 19th. The newest update, released last week, introduces new difficulty levels, including a Hard mode that makes enemies more dangerous. This mode increases enemy damage, shortens the time players are safe after dodging, and requires more precise timing for blocking and dodging attacks. The update also adds more storage chests to help players organize crafting materials, food, and quest items.
Despite its overall success, many players feel the story in Crimson Desert isn’t very strong. Trever McEwan, who worked on the game as a performance capture artist and model for the main character, Kliff, acknowledged this in a recent Q&A. He admitted the story has weaknesses, but also pointed out that the game excels in other areas.
He understood the criticism that the story was simple, but felt the game excelled in other areas. McEwan specifically praised the detailed world and backstory, noting that players could discover a rich history if they were willing to read and explore.
