The team at Digital Foundry recently released a detailed analysis of Crimson Desert, the open-world game launching on PS5 in about two weeks.
This analysis focuses on how well the game runs on computers, and the technology that powers its great graphics and realistic physics.
Pearl Abyss’ new game looks technically impressive and has a lot of potential, but players with PlayStation 5, including us, are curious to see how smoothly it will actually perform on those consoles.
Will Powers, the PR director, previously mentioned that Crimson Desert would be specifically improved for the PS5 Pro. This led many to believe the developers had focused on ensuring a stable console experience.
Currently, we haven’t seen gameplay of the game on anything except a powerful PC, even though PlayStation has featured it several times on their official YouTube channel.
Crimson Desert has always seemed like a very large-scale project, so PlayStation 5 owners have been concerned about how well it would run since it was first revealed. In fact, many people initially doubted the game would actually be released.
Digital Foundry has taken a closer look at Pearl Abyss’s latest build, noting that it’s still under development and running on older AMD graphics hardware. Importantly, it isn’t using any upscaling techniques, yet the performance is surprisingly good – much better than what you’d usually see from a game built with Unreal Engine 5 at similar settings.
So from a PS5 perspective, that sounds somewhat promising.
As expected, the game still looks like Crimson Desert, but with the graphics turned up to the highest level. According to the report, the settings are at ‘ultra’ – not the absolute maximum ‘cinematic’ setting – but still demonstrate the engine’s impressive power.
Okay, so I’m pretty sure the console versions won’t run exactly like the PC version – especially if you’re on a standard PS5. And honestly, hearing about them toning down the fancy lighting effects really confirms that’s probably what’s happening.
The article highlights realistic lighting, known as “ray-traced global illumination,” that simulates a complete 24-hour day and night cycle, including changing weather conditions.
The game also features realistic reflections, particularly noticeable in water. These kinds of visual effects require a lot of processing power.
Let’s wait to see how Crimson Desert actually plays on the PS5 before making any judgments. The limited amount of gameplay footage is a little concerning, but the game isn’t released until March 19th, so it’s too early to tell.
Excited about Crimson Desert potentially coming to PS5? What features or experiences are you hoping to see in the PlayStation 5 version? Share your thoughts and predictions in the comments!
