Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss Gets Launch Trailer Celebrating Release on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S

The psychological horror game, Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss, is now available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. To mark the release, the developers at Big Bad Wolf and publisher Nacon have shared a new launch trailer, which is a minute and a half long and can be viewed below.

The trailer introduces the story of Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss. It centers around a submarine station in the Pacific Ocean that was closed by the Ocean Eye corporation. Though they claim it was simply shut down, secret messages suggest something more is happening than they’re letting on.

The ship’s crew began experiencing unsettling phenomena – strange whispers in the darkness and the discovery of a lost city beneath the waves. You play as an investigator sent by the organization Ansel to uncover what happened to the crew and what secrets they found. However, this isn’t about saving anyone. It’s a ‘containment assessment’ – your job is simply to observe and report what you find.

Players in Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss have two helpful tools at their disposal: KEY, an AI assistant, and the SONAR, which locates clues. These clues can then be examined further in a place called the Vault. Earlier this month, game director Tommaso Sergi explained that the team aimed to create moments of sudden discovery for players, similar to the feeling of solving mysteries in games like Outer Wilds and The Forgotten City.

He explained that their main goal was to build a detective game focused on discovery. They wanted players to have that satisfying ‘aha!’ moment – the feeling of suddenly understanding everything, just like in games such as Outer Wilds or The Forgotten City, when the solution becomes clear.

The new horror game has received mixed reviews. It currently has a score of 70 out of 100 on Metacritic, based on 12 critic reviews. Players seem to either really appreciate its refined presentation and story, or find the slow gameplay frustrating.

The studio recently shared another trailer highlighting how the game utilizes the PlayStation 5’s features. This includes immersive experiences through the DualSense controller’s haptic feedback and adaptive triggers, plus enhanced audio with 5.1 surround sound and Dolby Atmos using the console’s 3D audio technology.

If you’re not sure if you’ll like the game, you can try the free demo on Steam. The developers also released a trailer in February showing the beginning of Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss. For fans of Lovecraftian horror, ACE Team is currently making a co-op game called The Mound: Omen of Cthulhu, and you can find more information about it here.
