Daredevil: Born Again’s Latest Major Death Is A Waste Of Marvel Comics Potential

Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Daredevil: Born Again season 2, episode 7

The second season of Daredevil: Born Again hasn’t shied away from eliminating important characters, but the latest death feels particularly disappointing, especially considering the character’s potential and their history in the original comic books.

The seventh episode of Daredevil: Born Again season 2 dramatically increases the conflict between Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk. Karen Page is on trial, forcing Matt to emerge from hiding and represent her in court. Meanwhile, Daniel Blake struggles with his position as Mayor Fisk’s communications deputy and his connection to BB Urich. Sadly, the episode concludes with Daniel Blake’s death for choosing to do what’s right, a loss that feels premature.

Considering the potential storylines, particularly those seen in Marvel Comics, it’s clear that Daniel’s unexpected death happened before his character could fully develop in some really interesting directions.

Why Daniel Blake’s Death In Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 Is So Surprising

Daniel Blake’s death in the seventh episode of Daredevil: Born Again is particularly heartbreaking for several reasons.

Even though Daniel was loyal to Mayor Fisk and believed in him for a long time, he couldn’t bring himself to hand over BB Urich to Buck Cashman, Fisk’s dangerous assistant. Cashman intended to kill BB for sharing information with the public through her secret network, ‘City Without Fear.’ Daniel did what he felt was right to protect someone he cared about, but it ultimately cost him everything he had.

Despite a developing friendship that suggested he might show mercy, Buck Cashman shockingly attacked Daniel, beating him severely before ultimately shooting him in the head. This unexpected act of violence was one of the most disturbing and surprising events of the season.

It felt like Daniel was finally beginning to grow as a character, and it would have been amazing to see him shed his naivete, oppose Mayor Fisk, and help BB reveal the truth. Sadly, that potential is never realized. It’s even more disappointing when you consider how much more developed his character could have been, based on his comic book origins.

I Really Wanted Daniel Blake To Be Kingpin’s Secret Son In The MCU

One reason Daniel’s death feels so disappointing is the potential he had to connect with the comic book storyline. Given his eagerness and admiration for Fisk, and his role within Fisk’s organization, I believe Daniel could have been adapted as the MCU version of Butch Pharris – Wilson Fisk’s unrecognized son from the comics.

The series doesn’t reveal much about Fisk’s father, but it’s clear Fisk had a complex relationship with him – a mix of respect, guidance, and a hint of something more. This connection was subtly established and would have powerfully linked to Fisk’s strong desire to create a lasting legacy. He even discussed wanting to be remembered with Vanessa Fisk before she passed away. Revealing a secret son would have dramatically amplified that theme and given Fisk a concrete way to leave his mark on the world.

Instead, Daniel’s story ends before any of that can happen.

The fact that an alternate ending was filmed – one where Daniel lived – makes his actual fate even harder to accept. It shows the creators at least thought about giving his story a longer continuation.

The final episode of Daredevil: Born Again begins streaming May 5th on Disney+ from Marvel Studios.
