David Tennant reveals how Rivals character is “more unhinged” in season 2 – and whether Tony does love Cameron

Could Tony Baddingham possibly become even more complex? Season 2 of Rivals definitely pushes the character into darker territory, especially after the shocking ending of season 1 left viewers wondering if David Tennant would continue in the role.

Despite winning an award, Tony hasn’t given up and is now seeking revenge on his competitors at Venturer.

Did David Tennant seem to portray a more troubled version of his character this season? In an interview with TopMob for Rivals season 2, Tennant explained that while his character recovers quickly from his injury, he’s not quite himself. He described it as if the character’s usual limitations and boundaries were removed.

“What filters he had seemed to have evaporated on the floor of his office in a pool of blood.

“So, there’s something slightly unhinged about him, slightly more unhinged about him.”

Tennant explained that the character is unpredictable, which causes friction between Monica and Tony. Monica has always been skilled at managing him, allowing him freedom but keeping him under control.

Claire Rushbrook, who plays Monica Baddingham, explained that her character’s husband has been trying to stay composed, but his injury and strong emotions are making it increasingly difficult for him to do so.

In the first episode of Rivals season 2, Cameron (Nafessa Williams) is still keeping her options open, while Tony tries to reconcile with her. It’s an odd situation, as Tony seems to be planning something bigger, but Cameron does finally tell him how she really feels.

Although Tony proposed to her at the end of the first season and threatened to divorce Monica, Cameron believes Tony doesn’t truly love her—his main goal is to defeat Rupert Campbell-Black (Alex Hassell).

When questioned about whether Tony genuinely loves Cameron, Tennant explained to TopMob that Tony has moments where he truly feels he does, but he’s also someone who takes advantage of situations and focuses on what’s happening right now.

Because he has some psychopathic tendencies, Tony might not interpret this the same way an objective observer – like Cameron – would.
