DC Studios has revealed the animated look for Supergirl, a major character in their upcoming DC Universe. Kara Zor-El, also known as Supergirl, will return to live-action on June 26th in the film Supergirl and is poised to become a key figure in this new cinematic world, led by DC Studios’ co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran.
Supergirl will appear in a new episode of the HBO Max animated series Krypto Saves the Day! Entertainment Weekly announced that this will be Supergirl’s first appearance in the DC Universe as an animated character. The episode, titled “Coastal Catastrophe,” features Krypto enjoying a beach day with Superman when his quest for a hot dog is disrupted by a mischievous seagull and crab.

Supergirl’s outfit looks just like the one from the live-action DC Universe series, featuring a blue top, red skirt, and boots. In the scene, she’s standing on a paddleboard with a stick in her hand, and two children are nearby, floating close to a whirlpool.
Supergirl will be just the second significant character featured in Krypto Saves the Day!, joining her well-known cousin, Superman. It’s currently unknown if Supergirl will speak when she first appears, as Superman didn’t have any lines in these shorts.

“Krypto Saves the Day!” is an animated short series that first appeared on HBO Max and YouTube in August 2025, with additional shorts released in October and November. Each short is between five and five-and-a-half minutes long and features Superman’s dog using his own amazing superpowers to overcome challenges.
The next episode of Krypto Saves the Day! will debut on YouTube on Saturday, April 18.
Is Supergirl’s Animated Appearance Canon to the DCU?

Just a reminder that the Krypto animated shorts aren’t part of the main DC Universe movie and TV storyline. They’re separate stories and won’t influence what happens with Supergirl and Krypto in the DCU. Their story will continue in the DCU after they reunite, which is planned to happen after the Superman movie comes out at the end of 2025.
I’m really excited for the Supergirl movie! From what I understand, it’s going to be heavily inspired by the Woman of Tomorrow comic book arc, and Krypto the Superdog will play a huge role. Apparently, he’ll be in serious danger when this villain, Krem of the Yellow Hills – played by Matthias Schoenaerts – attacks. Supergirl’s already got a lot on her plate, too, as she’s protecting this young girl named Ruthye and helping her get revenge for her parents. It sounds like a really compelling story!
Krypto proved popular in the Superman films, so fans will likely love him when he returns in Supergirl. It’s unclear what the future holds for these characters on screen, but Supergirl‘s first solo series promises plenty of exciting storylines.
