The Absolute Universe series is a fresh take on classic DC superheroes. It strips each hero down to their core identity and completely changes their world and backstory. While the characters themselves remain the same, everything around them is different. Absolute Batman is a prime example: this version of Batman is a blue-collar rebel fighting a corrupt system that allows the Joker to control Gotham. The lines between friend and foe are blurred – some of Batman’s usual villains are now allies, and the Robins, traditionally his partners, have become his biggest threats. Essentially, the entire Batman story has been reimagined.
While many key figures from Batman’s past have been featured, one important story has been missing: a complete collection of Batgirl’s adventures. That’s about to change! Writer Scott Snyder recently announced on the ComicPop Returns YouTube channel that the definitive Batgirl, Cassandra Cain, will soon be included in the Absolute Universe. The big question now isn’t if she’ll appear, but where her story will begin.
Absolute Batgirl Is on Her Way, But in Which Series?

Okay, so Zack Snyder let slip that Cassandra Cain is coming, and considering he also teased a Damian Wayne story years down the line, I’m taking “soon” to mean sometime this year. What’s really interesting is he’s being coy about where she’ll first appear. He’s basically telling us we need to read all the ‘Absolute’ books to find out, which, let’s be real, pretty much confirms she won’t be in ‘Absolute Batman.’ My prediction? Keep your eyes peeled for her in ‘Absolute Catwoman.’ That feels like the most logical place for her to show up.
James Tynion IV is a co-writer on the first six issues of Absolute Catwoman, working with Che Grayson, but he says he’s mostly letting Grayson lead the story and is just ensuring it connects to the broader Batman universe. The series focuses on Selina Kyle, who is established as a thief on par with Batman – possessing similar resources and even her own secret base – but she wants to retire. Of course, things don’t go as planned, and she’s forced to go on the run. The introduction of an ‘Absolute’ version of Cass (Cassandra Cain) is a clever way to bring her into the story. Either Selina discovers Cass, a troubled young woman, or Cass is sent to hunt Selina down, as she’s been trained to be a world-class assassin. Considering Selina’s history of taking in those in need, Cass – a true ‘stray’ – seems like a natural fit.
According to Snyder, Catwoman will reappear in Absolute Batman later this year, creating a great opportunity to introduce Cass into that series. Most of the Bat-Family has already been featured, with Cass and Batwoman being the only main members currently missing. It’s likely she’ll eventually become an ally to Batman, and the most logical way to make that happen – if she appears elsewhere first – would be through a crossover with Absolute Catwoman.
Where do you think Absolute Cass is most likely to debut?
