Mephisto’s Potential MCU Return Addressed By Sacha Baron Cohen

Sacha Baron Cohen first appeared as Mephisto in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2025, and he’s now talked about whether he might reprise the role in future movies.

After starring in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Dominique Thorne continued her role as Riri Williams in the 2025 series Ironheart. The show introduced her to the supernatural, starting with Parker Robbins (played by Anthony Ramos), also known as The Hood. While The Hood was a formidable opponent, the demonic Mephisto appeared in the show’s finale and proved to be a much greater threat. However, Marvel Studios hasn’t revealed any plans for Mephisto’s future appearances since then.

During a conversation with Liam Crowley from ScreenRant about his upcoming comedy film, Ladies First, starring Rosamund Pike, Sacha Baron Cohen was asked whether fans would see his character Mephisto or Borat return to the screen sooner. He expressed confidence that Mephisto, his Marvel character, was more likely to reappear first. Here’s what he said:

I think Mephisto. I don’t know if Borat will ever return.

Sacha Baron Cohen is famous for creating and playing funny, made-up characters who he then uses to playfully interact with real people. He first became well-known with characters like Borat Sagdiyev on his show, Da Ali G Show. Borat later got his own movie in 2006, and Cohen brought the character back 14 years later in Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, where he introduced a new character, Tutar, played by Maria Bakalova, as Borat’s daughter.

Look, I wouldn’t hold my breath for another Borat movie, but Sacha Baron Cohen seems to think his character Mephisto might pop up again in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Fans were already buzzing about a possible Mephisto cameo in WandaVision back in 2021, and now it’s finally happened – albeit in a smaller role. We saw how Riri Williams’s mentor, Howard Robbins, actually made a deal with this mysterious being to get his magical cloak in a flashback episode of Ironheart. It wasn’t a huge appearance, but it definitely opened the door for more Mephisto down the line.

Currently, Riri Williams made a bargain with Mephisto, bringing her friend Natalie back to life. However, this deal manifested as strange, glowing veins appearing on Riri’s arms, signifying Mephisto’s influence. Like with previous stories involving Mephisto, it’s unclear if the Ironheart storyline will continue or if actress Dominique Thorne will return as Riri in future Marvel television projects.

Mephisto first appeared in Marvel Comics’ Silver Surfer #3 in 1968, created by Stan Lee and John Buscema. The character is based on the classic villain Mephistopheles from the Faust legend. He often clashes with heroes like Ghost Rider, Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, and Scarlet Witch. Mephisto has been played by Peter Fonda in the 2007 film Ghost Rider and by Ciarán Hinds in 2012’s Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance.

Following the release of Ironheart in the summer of 2025, Agatha All Along, a spinoff of WandaVision starring Kathryn Hahn, came out a few months later. Since then, the Marvel Cinematic Universe hasn’t focused much on its magical or supernatural side. Future Marvel movies and shows are mainly concentrating on grounded, street-level action like the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day, science fiction stories such as VisionQuest, or large-scale cosmic events like Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.

With fans eagerly awaiting the next installment of Cohen’s Mephisto series after the end of Daredevil: Born Again season 2 and the release of The Punisher: One Last Kill from Marvel Studios, the Marvel Cinematic Universe will continue with Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which hits theaters on July 31st.

Ladies First will be available exclusively on Netflix starting Friday, May 22.
