Still mulling over questions about ‘s newest spinoff, ? So are series stars .
We wanted to understand who Beth and Rip are now, both as individuals and as a couple, but we didn’t get all the answers. Those questions still linger, and that felt the most honest portrayal. They crave a peaceful life and want to avoid conflict, but trouble keeps finding them anyway.
The season begins with Beth and Rip relocating to South Texas with their son, Carter, after a fire destroys their Montana ranch. Struggling financially, they quickly discover that succeeding in the competitive beef industry won’t be easy. Their biggest challenge comes from 10 Petal Ranch and its powerful owner, Beulah Jackson, played by Annette Bening.
Adjusting to life as newcomers with less influence was tough, especially compared to being established figures in Montana. Actor Forrie J. Smith wondered what his characters, Beth and Rip, would do and what challenges they’d face. He explained there were a lot of unknowns at first. Smith praised creator and former showrunner Chad Feehan and the writers for guiding them through this shift. They were able to meet with Feehan and the writing team to understand the show’s direction and how their characters would develop.
Dutton Ranch Takes the Cake for Best Yellowstone Spinoff in Years
Beth and Rip are facing challenges adapting to life as both cowboys and business leaders at the Dutton Ranch, but audiences and critics are really enjoying their journey. Currently, the show has an 84% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, significantly higher than the 42% rating for Marshals and even better than the 58% rating Yellowstone received for its first season.
The new show offers a glimpse into the original Yellowstone days, delivering the dramatic storylines and strong emotional impact that Taylor Sheridan is famous for. Viewers have also appreciated how the series allows a character’s story to unfold naturally, without being overly tied to his or her parents’ plots – something that isn’t always the case for characters like Tate on Marshals.
Despite complaints from many Yellowstone fans about the writing, new characters, and the show’s more episodic style, the series has already been picked up for a second season. While the future of Dutton Ranch remains uncertain after just two episodes, it’s still too soon to tell what will happen. Because the show is already proving more popular with viewers who enjoyed Yellowstone, another renewal seems likely.
Starting May 15th, new episodes of Dutton Ranch will premiere every Friday at 8pm Eastern Time on the Paramount Network.
