DC Studios has a lot planned for the coming year, with new movies like Supergirl and Clayface hitting theaters. On TV, fans are eagerly awaiting Lanterns, a series debuting on HBO Max this August. It’s the first live-action Green Lantern project since the 2011 movie, which has built up a lot of excitement. The show boasts a strong cast, including Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre, but it’s also faced criticism. The initial trailer suggested a realistic, *True Detectivestyle drama, which some felt strayed too far from the source material’s comic book roots. Now, the showrunner, Chris Mundy, is responding to the negative feedback.
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, showrunner Tom Mundy addressed early reactions to the Lanterns series. He explained that while it’s a Green Lantern show and features the color green, the series aims for a realistic and grounded aesthetic. They’re filming on location as much as possible, minimizing the use of green screens and avoiding overly bright or artificial visuals. Mundy believes fans will be pleased, assuring them that the show remains true to the spirit of the comics and delivers the expected look for the Green Lantern constructs. The goal is to immerse viewers in a believable world where these constructs naturally exist.
He explained that they deliberately avoided making a flashy trailer, and the fact that people are discussing it shows they’re interested in the show. He emphasized their deep respect for the original story, which is why they decided to adapt it. He’s confident that once people watch the show, any concerns will disappear.
Lanterns Is an Important Project for the DC Universe’s Future

For a while, people have been saying the new series, Lanterns, would feel similar to True Detective. The recently released teaser seemed to deliver on that expectation. However, seeing the actual footage is different than just hearing about the show, and that’s why some fans were surprised. The trailer didn’t show any of the typical Green Lantern powers or special effects, and the story seems much more realistic than the usual cosmic adventures associated with the Green Lanterns. While this more grounded approach could be interesting, viewers are still unsure if it will work.
DC fans are eager to see the iconic green energy and powers of the Green Lanterns in the upcoming show, but DC Studios has a good reason for not showing them off just yet. When the first teaser dropped in March, the show was still several months from release, meaning the visual effects weren’t finished. The team wants to avoid the mistake of releasing unfinished CGI online, which could create unwanted negative attention. Ryan Reynolds’ digital costume in the previous Green Lantern movie is still remembered as a major visual misstep, so the Lanterns team is being extra cautious. It’s smarter to focus on other parts of the series for now and slowly reveal the Green Lantern powers in a way that will impress audiences.
It’s no surprise that Mundy is positive about Lanterns right now, as they’re still promoting the show, but his emphasis on “respect for the source material” is a good sign. James Gunn has a history of bringing unique comic book ideas to life, so it makes sense that staying true to the original material was important for the Lanterns team. Since becoming head of DC Studios, Gunn has insisted on approving every script before production begins. It’s hard to believe he would approve a Green Lantern show that didn’t include familiar and classic elements from the comics.
With the release of Lanterns getting closer, it will be interesting to see how DC Studios continues to promote the show. Hopefully, future previews will show more of the iconic green color scheme, which could address some fan concerns. Lanterns is set to be a key part of the new DC Universe, and it’s already confirmed that Lyriq Bent will return as John Stewart from Justice League: Doom. James Gunn has also hinted that the show is crucial for establishing the future of the DCU. It’s important that Lanterns resonates with viewers, and we’re hoping it will be a truly memorable addition to the universe.
