A charming movie featuring Maggie Smith and a wonderful group of British actors will be on television tonight.
Released in 2012, Quartet centers around Jean Horton, a retired opera singer portrayed by Maggie Smith, as she moves into Beecham House, a retirement home for former performers. Her arrival causes trouble because her ex-husband, Reginald (played by Tom Courtenay), also lives there and is upset that he wasn’t told she was coming.
When Jean moves in, the other residents encourage her to join their annual concert, where they plan to perform a quartet from Verdi’s Rigoletto. She’s hesitant, worried her singing voice isn’t as strong as it once was. The movie is a funny and heartwarming look at getting older, facing life’s challenges, and the joy music can bring.
You can watch the film tonight, Friday, November 28th, on BBC Two at 11pm. It lasts 94 minutes and will be available on BBC iPlayer soon after it airs. It’s also currently available to stream on Prime Video and Sky Cinema.
Sheridan Smith played the doctor in the film, and she recently shared stories about working with the late Maggie Smith on the television program, The One Show.
She described feeling incredibly anxious, explaining that she was surrounded by incredibly talented and experienced actors and felt completely overwhelmed. Just before filming a scene, Dame Maggie Smith noticed she was starting to panic and playfully reassured her with the phrase, ‘Smiths stick together!’
Dustin Hoffman’s first time directing a movie was with ‘Quartet,’ which earned $59.5 million despite costing only $11 million to make.
