I’ve been watching the numbers, and *Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle* has officially become the highest-grossing anime film ever! It’s even surpassed the incredible success of *Demon Slayer: Mugen Train*, and pretty much every other anime movie out there. It’s amazing – it seems like the only thing that can beat *Demon Slayer* at the box office is another *Demon Slayer* movie! With two more films planned to complete the trilogy, the CEO of Crunchyroll is now hoping to take things even further and push for an Academy Award. They really want to solidify this franchise’s incredible success.
I recently read an interview with Crunchyroll’s CEO, Rahul Purini, and he seemed very confident about *Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle*’s chances of winning an Academy Award. He pointed out that anime isn’t a stranger to the Oscars – Studio Ghibli’s *Spirited Away* and *The Boy and the Heron* have both won before. While no action-packed ‘shonen’ anime has ever taken home an Oscar, Purini believes this film is special. He told The Hollywood Reporter he thinks the animation, story, and overall quality are outstanding, and that the fans deserve to see it recognized. Crunchyroll plans to actively support the film’s consideration in all eligible categories.
Crunchyroll’s Success Thanks to The Hashira
The anime streaming service has clearly benefited from the huge popularity of *Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle*. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Purini explained their strategy: they aim to be the go-to service for dedicated anime fans, rather than trying to appeal to everyone. The movie’s success is boosting other areas of their business, like merchandise, games, music, and, of course, the streaming service itself. For instance, they recently offered a promotion allowing viewers to watch an entire season of *Demon Slayer* even without a subscription. This is still available, so those who saw the movie can now easily dive into the full series. Their focus is on providing a great experience for these new viewers, hoping to then introduce them to even more anime and build a loyal fanbase.
The CEO of Crunchyroll also noted that while younger fans-like Gen Z and Gen Alpha-were a major reason for the film’s success, older generations also contributed. Many parents brought their children to see *Infinity Castle*, and there was a significant number of fans in their 30s, 40s, and 50s. While anime is particularly popular with younger audiences, it clearly appeals to a wide range of ages.
