After almost nine years, Bungie is ending support for Destiny 2. The game, which launched in 2017, has received many story expansions and updates over the years. However, player interest has decreased recently, leading Bungie to reduce the frequency of new content releases. Ultimately, this has led to the decision to move away from Destiny 2 entirely.
Bungie announced on its website today that it’s shifting focus to new projects. As a result, Destiny 2 will receive its final update on June 9th. The game will remain playable, but this marks the end of nearly ten years of active development by Bungie.
Okay, so Bungie just announced some big news. They’re starting to work on new games, which is awesome, but that means they’re wrapping things up with Destiny 2. They’re planning one last big update on June 9th, 2026, and after that, they won’t be actively adding new content. Don’t worry though, they’re promising the game will still be playable for a long time, just like the original Destiny still is! They want that final update to make the game really welcoming for players, even if we haven’t been on in a while. Honestly, they’ve been amazing throughout the whole Destiny journey, and they said they’ll still be around for years to come. Big thanks to everyone who’s played!

Look, as someone who’s been playing Destiny 2 for ages, I wasn’t exactly shocked to hear this news. It’s been pretty clear the game hasn’t been as popular lately, and Marathon just didn’t take off like Bungie wanted it to. They really need a big success right now, and starting a whole new game is going to take up a ton of their time and energy for the next few years, that’s for sure.
Even though support for Destiny 2 is ending soon, development on Marathon is still going strong. Season 2 of the game, an extraction shooter, starts June 2nd and will add a lot of new content.
