Old habits die hard for Dexter Morgan in Dexter: Resurrection.
Following a decade of disappearing, a coma induced by his son’s gunshot, and a fresh start in New York City, Dexter Morgan is slowly reverting to his past habits as a serial killer, as hinted at by the ending of Dexter: Resurrection season one. Executive producer Scott Reynolds has mentioned the return of his tradition of giving donuts, and now Michael C. Hall, who plays Dexter Morgan, has suggested that a key element of his methods from his time as the Bay Harbor Butcher might also reappear, after being abandoned in Dexter: New Blood.
Dexter Morgan originally killed people and secretly buried them in the Gulf of Mexico while living in Florida, using his boat, Slice of Life. When he moved to Iron Lake, however, he no longer had access to the ocean. So, during the New Blood and Resurrection seasons, he switched to burning the bodies of his victims in an incinerator instead.
I was so excited to hear Michael C. Hall talk about the possibility of Dexter going back to his old ways! At a recent event for Dexter: Resurrection, ScreenRant‘s Liam Crowley asked him if Dexter might start using water burials again now that he has that boat. Michael didn’t give us a straight answer, but he definitely hinted that Dexter probably won’t be able to resist! He basically said he ‘can’t imagine’ Dexter wouldn’t go back to burying bodies in the water – it’s just so Dexter! It’s great to think he might revisit that classic Bay Harbor Butcher method.
In the first season finale, Dexter acquires a new boat that’s reminiscent of his original ‘Slice of Life.’ This raises the question of whether he’ll revert to his old method of disposing of bodies in the water, potentially becoming known as the ‘Hudson River Butcher’ once again, or if he’s left that practice behind.
Michael C. Hall acknowledged a particular idea as sensible, but remained intentionally ambiguous about it. He suggested the character in question likely wouldn’t be able to resist a certain impulse, though disposing of something in the ocean as originally planned is no longer an option. He hinted the character might find another accessible waterway near New York City to achieve a similar outcome.
Dexter now has a boat he could use to get rid of bodies in the rivers around New York City, similar to how he did in Miami. However, according to Hall, Dexter might be changing his methods. He could be traveling further out to sea, disposing of bodies in the Atlantic Ocean or other large bodies of water, making it harder to connect the crimes back to him.
We don’t know exactly how much time has passed between the end of Dexter: Resurrection season one and the start of season two, but it seems like Dexter has fully adjusted to his new life in New York and refined his methods. The first season showed him struggling to adapt to a new environment and deal with both old and new enemies. However, season two seems to be settling into a familiar pattern, much like the original Dexter series.
Production on season 2 of Dexter: Resurrection began about a month ago in New York City, as the show also gears up for its first Emmy nominations. Michael C. Hall will reprise his role as Dexter Morgan, and several other familiar faces are returning, including Jack Alcott as Harrison Morgan, James Remar as Harry Morgan, Uma Thurman as Charley Brown, Kadia Saraf as Claudette Wallace, Dominic Fumusa as Melvin Oliva, Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine as Blessing Kamara, and Desmond Harrington as Joey Quinn.
As Dexter Morgan continues his pursuit of criminals, the popular Showtime series has revealed some of the new villains he’ll be facing. These include Brian Cox playing The New York Ripper, a difficult case for investigator Wallace, and Dan Stevens as The Five Borough Killer, a younger criminal who enjoys threatening violence against innocent people to taunt the police.
While Paramount+ hasn’t announced an exact date, the showrunner for Dexter: Resurrection has hinted that the new season might premiere in October 2026.
