Although the show hinted at a big future for John Diggle, involving him becoming a Green Lantern, that storyline never happened in The CW’s Arrowverse shows. The Arrowverse successfully brought many DC Comics heroes to life on television, but plans for Diggle to finally become a Green Lantern were unfortunately cancelled.
During a recent ScreenRant panel focused on Arrowverse heroes, hosted by Joe Deckelmeier, David Ramsey discussed the long-term storyline that led his character, Diggle, towards potentially becoming an Emerald Knight. Ramsey, who appeared in all seasons of Arrow, explained that he and Marc Guggenheim had been working towards this development for six seasons. He also noted the complexities involved with a major character taking on the role of a Lantern, due to the ownership and usage rights of such a prominent character.
Ramsey explained that it would have been fantastic to have John Wesley Shipp’s Flash from Earth-90 reference his past role, saying, “John, where’s your ring?” He also mentioned they had Ernie Hudson play his father as Colonel Stewart. Ultimately, Ramsey stated that while they had tried to make it happen, it was the right choice not to.
The actor, known for their work in the Arrowverse, believes the DC property is now in good hands, likely referring to James Gunn’s new DC Universe and its upcoming Green Lantern series for HBO. They explained that the complex political situation surrounding the property made its future uncertain before the change in leadership.
By season 8 of The Flash, Diggle had made the decision not to accept the ring’s power. Ramsey felt this was a fitting choice for his character, explaining, “I think the reason why Diggle didn’t become the Lantern was on point for his character.”
In the later years of the Arrowverse, producer Greg Berlanti was working on a Green Lanterns series for HBO Max. The original plan involved several Lanterns, including Alan Scott, Guy Gardner, Simon Baz, and Jessica Cruz. However, just before the launch of DC Studios, the show was changed to center on John Stewart. Ultimately, the project was canceled when James Gunn and DC Studios began developing their own Lanterns series for HBO as part of the new DC Universe.
The Arrowverse TV shows faced limitations from Warner Bros.’s movie department. They weren’t able to use many popular characters, like Wonder Woman and Batman, on a regular basis because those characters were reserved for major motion pictures and the big-screen Justice League.
While the Arrowverse never fully explored the Green Lantern stories, the show Stargirl came the closest. Set on the newly created Earth-2 after the Crisis on Infinite Earths event, Stargirl’s second season introduced Jennifer-Lynn Hayden, also known as Jade, who is the daughter of Alan Scott and uses her father’s power ring.
All the Arrowverse shows are available through streaming and home media release.
