Director Zach Cregger explains why there’s a Resident Evil, ‘Bryan’
It’s been thirty years since the original Resident Evil video game debuted in 1996, and the franchise has since spawned seven films, starting in 2002. These movies have collectively earned over $1.2 billion, even though Netflix cancelled its Resident Evil series after only one season in 2022. The trailer for the newest Resident Evil film has sparked some debate among dedicated fans due to the introduction of a new main character, Bryan, played by Austin Abrams. According to Playstation director Zach Cregger, the film follows Bryan, a medical courier who must fight to survive when a sudden outbreak occurs during a delivery.
The reason for Resident Evil Bryan….
Director Zach Cregger wanted to create a Resident Evil story that felt fresh and didn’t retread familiar ground. He explained to Playstation that he avoided retelling Leon’s story because the games already handle it so well, and he didn’t want to be redundant or disappointing. Instead, he aimed to expand the Resident Evil universe by telling a new story that could happen alongside the events of the games, celebrating what he loves about the franchise.
He explained that the story is set in the world of Resident Evil 2, though with some changes for the sake of the narrative. It follows a new character on a mission during the chaotic night in Raccoon City, tasking them with transporting something from one location to another. Along the way, they’ll face the same kinds of dangers and challenges players experience in the games.
He described his character, Austin, as a stand-in for the average gamer dropped into a video game. Austin is intentionally portrayed as a regular, relatable guy—not skilled in combat, just generally athletic. He’s a good-natured, ordinary person thrown into a terrifying situation. The creator found it enjoyable to consider his own authentic reaction to something like a mutant dog attack, and Austin is the perfect character to experience and display that range of emotions.
