Despite the trend of gender-swapped stories, Disney initially saw promise in this project. It had a solid director with experience from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and a cast including well-known actors like Greg Kinnear and Aidy Bryant. It’s surprising, then, that the series was cancelled before anyone even saw the finished pilot episode, particularly since Disney has been focusing on revisiting its classic films instead of creating new content.
Disney+ has cancelled its planned series adaptation of Holes. The show, based on the award-winning novel by Louis Sachar and the 2003 Disney film, was a modern take on the story with a female lead, Hayley (played by Shay Rudolph), sent to a detention camp. Like the original, the plot involved campers being forced to dig holes under the supervision of the warden (Kinnear), but with a new perspective. Walden Media, who made the original movie, was also producing this version.
It Probably Wouldn’t Have Stuck Its Landing With Audiences

The movie Holes follows Stanley Yelnats, a young man wrongly accused of theft and sentenced to a juvenile work camp called Camp Green Lake. Despite its name, the camp is actually a harsh desert environment. There, Stanley and the other boys are forced to dig holes all day under the supervision of a cruel warden. As the days go by, Stanley makes friends and they begin to uncover the real reason they are digging.
Many who enjoyed the original movie weren’t shocked the show didn’t get picked up. One Reddit user pointed out that changing the genders actually created new issues, questioning the logic of having a male warden overseeing a remote camp for troubled teenage girls. Another commenter highlighted concerns about the villain’s predatory behavior, noting it felt even more disturbing with the gender swap.
They’re right – there’s a lot of popular young adult books and stories available, and Disney has likely already considered many of them. While books like Holes have become beloved classics, now is a great opportunity to introduce audiences to fresh, new content – maybe even a successful live-action adaptation of Maximum Ride.
