Disney Confirms New Nightmare Before Christmas Sequel for 2026

The popular series will be back this fall, just in time for Halloween. A brand new four-episode story will take viewers back to the spooky and charming world created by Tim Burton.

New cover art has been revealed for both the paperback and hardcover versions of the upcoming book, The Nightmare Before Christmas: The Shiver of Christmas Town. It’s currently scheduled to be released on September 15, 2026. Target’s website lists the paperback for $15.99 and the hardcover for $22.99. You can see the cover art and a sneak peek at some of the illustrations inside the book below.

New Nightmare Before Christmas Sequel Adds a Delightfully Spooky New Character

This story was originally published as four separate comics by Dynamite Entertainment, starting in January. Now, it’s being released as a single collected edition – a great option for readers who want to enjoy the complete story without needing to find each individual issue.

A new miniseries, The Nightmare Before Christmas, offered a fresh take on the beloved tale, shifting the focus away from Jack Skellington. The Shiver of Christmas Town was written by Torunn Grønbekk, known for her work on Red Sonja, and illustrated by Edu Menna, who has contributed to Army of Darkness.

The first issue introduces Dr. Finkelstein’s latest invention – a creature he intended to be frightening! However, it turns out to be adorable and sweet instead. He gives the creature to Sally, who calls it Shiver because of its icy breath. Shiver’s journey eventually leads him to Oogie Boogie’s lair, kicking off an exciting adventure for movie fans.

As Christmas Town and Halloween Town continue blending their holiday customs, the Mayor enlists Lock, Shock, and Barrel to show the Christmas Town residents how to trick-or-treat. This is the first time anyone from Christmas Town has experienced trick-or-treating, and of course, plenty of mischief ensues!

As the story concludes, Shiver starts to resemble the frightening character Dr. Finkelstein initially intended him to be. The preview hints that with Shiver fully embracing his scary side and Oogie Boogie’s monsters causing chaos, the town’s first Halloween might be ruined. However, Sally, Mrs. Claus, and their team of heroes still have a chance to save the celebration with a little luck and cooperation.

The Nightmare Before Christmas Sequel Was Created with Disney & Burton’s Approval

Fans have been eagerly awaiting this release, and thankfully, both Disney and Tim Burton were committed to making sure The Christmas of Shiver Town lived up to expectations. According to creator Grønbekk, the entire series was revised and updated based on feedback from both Disney and Tim Burton. He explained that every story outline and script went through their review process.

Consequently, some of the jokes originally planned for the comic books were either removed or changed. According to Grønbekk, “Some of my humor was a bit too dark,” but overall, maintaining the authentic feel of Halloween Town went smoothly. The team would check if new additions, like shops, fit the established style, and then get approval to ensure everyone was happy with the result.

The Nightmare Before Christmas: The Shiver of Christmas Town TPB goes on sale Sept. 15.
