Disney’s Revival of Hit 2000s Sitcom Officially Breaks a Streaming Record (& It’s Good News for the Future)

Hulu and Disney have successfully revived several popular shows from the past, and they’re continuing that trend. Recent years have seen the return of franchises like Futurama, King of the Hill, The Amazing World of Gumball, and Animaniacs. This month, Hulu released a new mini-series that many fans thought would never happen. By taking a chance on bringing back a beloved sitcom family from the Fox universe, the streaming service is already seeing a significant boost in viewership.

According to Deadline, the Malcolm in the Middle revival, titled Life’s Still Unfair, quickly became a hit on Hulu, attracting 8.1 million viewers in its first three days. The four-episode mini-series reunites most of the original cast – Malcolm, Reese, Dewey, Francis, Lois, and Hal – and is currently Hulu’s biggest success of 2026. While revivals of Gumball and King of the Hill were popular last year, they’ll need to perform exceptionally well to surpass the viewership numbers of this Malcolm in the Middle return.

Will Malcolm In The Middle Continue?

After the first four episodes of the Malcolm in the Middle revival were released on Hulu, many fans have been hoping to see more stories from this world. So far, neither Hulu nor Disney has announced whether Malcolm and his family will be back, but there’s definitely potential for future seasons. The last episode introduced Malcolm’s younger sister, Kelly, interacting with his daughter, Leah, and the genetically engineered son of his friends. If a new series happens, it would likely center around these three characters, even if the original cast isn’t involved.

Among all the sitcoms Fox has broadcast, Malcolm in the Middle remains incredibly popular, particularly because it wasn’t a cartoon. The show originally premiered in 2000 and ran for more than six years, producing over 150 episodes. The recent revival, Life’s Still Unfair, not only performed well in terms of viewership, but also received positive reviews, currently holding an 80% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Linwood Boomer, the creator of Malcolm in the Middle, recently told TVLine that while he’s tired, he’s open to the possibility of continuing the recent mini-series. He felt the creative process went very well and suggests a full series revival wouldn’t have worked as effectively. He left the door open to a second season, but implied the mini-series format was key to its success.
