Alex Kingston and Arthur Darvill are returning as River Song and Rory Williams in a brand new Doctor Who audio drama, which will be available in January 2027.
A new audio drama boxset, ‘The Death and Life of River Song’, featuring River and Rory, will include four stories. These are ‘Bog Man’ by Lizzie Hopley, ‘Life Lessons’ by Karissa Hamilton-Bannis, ‘A Most Dangerous Game’ by Robert Valentine, and ‘The Tashpa Stone’ co-written by Shai Hussain and John Dorney.
These new stories take place between the end of River Song’s story in season 6 and the start of the Dalek season in season 7. During this time, River discovers her parents have split up, and Rory is staying with a friend in Birmingham.
While trying to connect as a family, a father and daughter find themselves on the run from dangerous pursuers who are after River.

Alex Kingston and Arthur Darvill will reunite as River Song and Rory Williams for the first time since their final scene together in the 2012 episode, “The Angels Take Manhattan,” which marked Rory’s last appearance on screen.
Producer David Richardson shared that he’s always considered the Eleventh Doctor, Amy, Rory, and River Song to be one of the best teams in Doctor Who history. He’s excited to revisit that time and create new adventures featuring Alex Kingston and Arthur Darvill as their popular characters.
We’ve been working on this project for a while – the initial planning started way back in 2020! – but everything finally came together, and we were able to record ‘River and Rory’ over four really fun days in May.

I was so excited to hear that Arthur Darvill is totally up for coming back to Doctor Who! He told TopMob’s Doctor Who Insiders he’d love to work with Matt Smith and Karen Gillan again, as long as the storyline was good. Seriously, a reunion with that trio would be amazing!
He recalled that when they left, everyone agreed they’d never return, wanting to preserve the perfect experience. However, he continued, they’ve all since pursued their own paths…
You know, looking back can be a little bittersweet, but honestly, that project was a huge part of my life and some of the most fun I’ve ever had working on anything. I wouldn’t want to say never to doing it again – it really shaped me. It’s just not really up to me, but if the chance ever came around, I think all of us would be totally on board.
