Avengers: Doomsday is the crossover movie Marvel fans have been waiting for since the very beginning of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It’s easy to forget now, but early Marvel movies didn’t feature the most popular characters. While heroes like Iron Man and Captain America are now considered A-list, they used to play supporting roles to characters like the X-Men and Spider-Man. However, Marvel had already sold the movie rights to those popular characters – to Sony and 20th Century Fox – which is why the X-Men and the Avengers never appeared together in a film until now.
Things shifted dramatically in 2019 when Disney acquired 20th Century Fox. Spider-Man was already connected to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) through a separate agreement, but the Fox deal meant the rights to the X-Men characters returned to Marvel. Since then, mutants have started appearing in the main MCU storyline (with Ms. Marvel being the first officially confirmed one). The current Multiverse Saga offers a way to incorporate the X-Men from the Fox films, and it all seems to be building towards the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday movie. However, it’s becoming increasingly clear that this won’t be a simple team-up.
We’re Headed For Avengers Vs. X-Men

The first footage from Avengers: Doomsday was shown at CinemaCon, but hasn’t been released online yet. It promises a huge adventure and showcased how formidable Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom will be – a shot of him casually catching Stormbreaker between his fingers was particularly striking. Perhaps even more surprisingly, the footage revealed that the X-Men and Avengers won’t be teaming up. Instead, the movie will feature battles between the two teams, including a fight between Mystique and Yelena Belova’s Black Widow, and another between Gambit and Shang-Chi. This is likely just a small preview of what’s to come.
As a film fan, I’ve noticed a really interesting trend: superhero team-ups almost always start with a fight! It’s been happening since the 1960s, and honestly, it makes sense. Fans like me are always debating who’s stronger – Superman or the Hulk, Cyclops or Captain America, Reed Richards or Tony Stark. In the comics, the X-Men and the Avengers have a pretty rocky relationship, constantly battling each other as much as they team up. The 2012 ‘Avengers Vs. X-Men’ event was a massive example of this, and they even made a whole series focusing on one-on-one fights between the heroes.
Avengers: Doomsday brings together heroes from across the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the previous Fox Marvel films. The story is based on a comic book arc where universes crash into each other, causing widespread destruction. In these ‘incursions,’ the only way to stop the destruction is to eliminate one of the colliding universes. If the worlds of the X-Men and the MCU’s Earth-616 are on a collision course, then a battle for survival is inevitable, with both teams fighting to save their realities.
It’s now clear why we’re finally getting the Avengers vs. X-Men story. The plot sets up a no-holds-barred battle between mutants and other super-powered individuals. Adding to the tension, Doctor Doom is secretly building a threat so immense that even Thor considers him the most dangerous enemy he’s ever known – powerful enough to effortlessly grasp Thor’s mighty Stormbreaker.
