In The Empire Strikes Back, Master Yoda famously warned Luke Skywalker that once someone begins to follow a dark path, it will control their future and ultimately consume them. Yoda spoke from witnessing the tragic fall of Anakin Skywalker, as shown in the earlier Star Wars films. However, Yoda’s grim prediction didn’t fully come true. Anakin was ultimately redeemed, and even became a Force Ghost, proving he chose the side of good in the end.
The conflict between good and evil is central to the Star Wars story. This struggle often plays out as direct battles between the Jedi and the Sith, with lightsabers clashing. But more frequently, it’s a personal battle within a Jedi, as they grapple with the temptation of the dark side and decide whether to give in or resist. Throughout both the official Star Wars timeline and the older ‘Legends’ stories, we’ve seen many Jedi fall from grace, and sometimes find redemption – characters like Kylo Ren, Jacen Solo, and even Luke Skywalker in the Dark Empire comics. However, I was particularly invested in seeing a Jedi struggle with this internal conflict in the Maul – Shadow Lord story.
Devon Izara’s Star Wars Destiny Seems Certain

The comic series Maul – Shadow Lord takes place during the dark years of the Empire. Darth Maul is looking for a new apprentice to help him challenge Palpatine and Vader. He chooses Devon Izara, a Twi’lek Jedi Padawan who survived Order 66 and is trying to find her place as a Jedi in a galaxy forever changed. The story shares similarities with early ideas George Lucas had for the sequel trilogy, which involved Maul as a crime lord with a Twi’lek apprentice – a character named Darth Talon originally from the Legends continuity.
Devon reminds people of Ahsoka Tano, a former Jedi Padawan, because she also seems very self-assured. While Ahsoka followed Jedi principles even after leaving the Order, Devon is eager to forge her own path. She’s already shown a rebellious streak, defying her master and the Jedi Code – she’d rather steal than suffer, and isn’t afraid to use the Force powerfully. Although she’s currently resisting the dark side, particularly the influence of Maul, she’s dangerously close to giving in.
The biggest problem was Devon using Darth Maul’s lightsaber. Lightsabers aren’t just blades—they’re channels for the Force that a Jedi or Sith connects with. By using Maul’s lightsaber, Devon was able to sense her thoughts and even learned her name. Because of this connection, Darth Maul’s former master, Palpatine, now has a way to influence Devon’s mind and control her.
Devon’s Story is Too Good For Just One Season
The connection between Maul and Devon is the most interesting part of Shadow Lord, and it’s a storyline fans are really invested in. Maul – Shadow Lord has been renewed for another season, and continuing their relationship is crucial. However, the story faces a challenge: for it to work, Devon will likely have to ultimately join Maul. While Jedi and Sith might temporarily team up against Darth Vader’s Inquisitors, that alliance wouldn’t last. The only way to keep the story going is for Devon to fully embrace the dark side.
As a huge Star Wars fan, I’ve been following the speculation about Devon potentially becoming Darth Talon, and it’s fascinating! The creators of Shadow Lord actually know about the fan theory, which is wild. But what really gets me thinking is what would happen if she did end up with Maul. We already know from Solo that he builds up Crimson Dawn, and Rebels showed us he eventually loses everything. By the time of Rebels, he’s totally isolated, even desperate enough to try and take on Ezra as an apprentice. So, if Devon joins forces with him, knowing he’s headed for a fall… that opens up so many exciting possibilities for her story. It’s a really compelling setup!
When Jedi confront the dark side, it usually feels like their fate is sealed. We often see Jedi as pure heroes, making it hard to imagine them becoming Sith—even if they experiment, they always seem destined to return to the light. But Devon’s story is different. Because she’s a new character without a strong established history, anything can happen to her, and that makes her potential fall to the dark side particularly captivating and unpredictable – it’s the most compelling character arc we’ve seen in a while.
